Review: Overdue by Miranda Elaine

Overdue Overdue by Miranda Elaine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super cute, slow burn, friends to lovers romance. This follows introverted Leni and her best friend and neighbor Griffin. They have been neighbors since they were nine when Leni moved in with her grandmother. They didn't really like each other back then, but as they got to know each other, they realized they could be friends. Griffin was there for Leni when she really needed a friend, and he's been there for her ever since. They've both kept their romantic feelings for each other hidden since they were teenagers to protect their friendship. Leni has dealt with tragedy before, and when another event threatens to take someone she loves from her Griffin is there to take care of her and help her keep things together.

Griffin is the sweetest, he is patient with Leni and loves her for her. He also supports her when she needs it and pushes her to face her fears. I really liked that he never once wanted to change her, he only wanted to take care of her or support her so she could take care of herself. They had great banter and good healthy conversations. I love seeing adults having real conversations in books.

This was my first Miranda Elaine book, but I'll certainly be checking out her other books after reading this one. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. I also really loved Leni's grandmother, Helen. She was hilarious! I also loved Parker, the new neighbor who ends up being a great friend to Leni. I believe this is a stand-alone, but I wouldn't be upset if we got a book with Parker's story. She was a great friend, but also has some sass.

SNEAK PEEK: I Promise You by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Will this quarterback score the girl or make the biggest fumble of his life?

I Promise You, an all-new not-to-be-missed, new adult, sports romance sure to make you swoon from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills is coming October 12th, and we have the first sneak peek!

I can’t move. I’m rooted to the black and white linoleum tile on her floor as I stare at her. My chest rises, inhaling gulps of air. She took off her hat at the door, or somewhere, and pulled her hair out of her ponytail. Gleaming brown, copper, and blonde strands spill around her shoulders. Three colors in anyone’s hair should be over the top, but on her it’s…
My eyes scan over her face, clearly lit by the florescent lights in the apartment.
Adrenaline hits my bloodstream. Swaying on my feet, I right myself with effort.
She’s—holy shit—the girl from the bonfire.
Same face, petite body, and fierceness.

Synopsis

Dillon McQueen: Babe. I promise. You want me.
Serena Jensen: Um, who are you?

There’s a legend at Waylon University: the first girl you kiss freshman year at the bonfire party is the one you’ll never forget. She’ll crawl under your skin and never leave. She’ll spark a passion so fierce you’ll burn the world down to possess her.

You might even put a ring on it.

As in all things with fate, timing is everything. That kiss can go horribly wrong. She might run in the opposite direction. And boy, did Serena run.

Dillon is Waylon’s hotshot quarterback with something to prove. All he wants is to graduate and make it to the NFL. What he doesn’t need is to finally meet the mystery girl he kissed at the bonfire freshman year. Isn’t it enough that she’s haunted his dreams for more than a thousand nights?

Fate laughs in his face when he runs into the quirky girl at the Piggly Wiggly. Surrounded by his entourage, he’s got all the Oreos in his cart; she gets revenge by buying every six-pack of his favorite beer.

Obviously, that legend is a curse. She’s not his type and hates him. Worst of all, how can she not remember him when she left a Serena-shaped hole in his heart for the past three years?

So why can’t he stop trying to win her?

Will this quarterback score the girl or make the biggest fumble of his life?

Review: Horrorstör

Horrorstör Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was actually pretty funny!

I didn't know what to expect after reading [book:The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires|44074800], and not really enjoying it.  This was highly recommended and I really enjoyed it.  It was dark, while also bringing a unique sense of comedy.  I loved the whole Orsk concept of the store being a knock off of Ikea.  Having been to and gotten lost in Ikea many times myself, he really got the whole Scandinavian furniture store down in his fictional version in Cleveland.  I think he also did a really good job capturing the "culture" of the Orsk company.

This follows Amy, an employee aka partner, at Orsk.  She kind of hates her job in retail, really doesn't like her boss Basil, but she suffers through it for the paycheck.  Unfortunately, Orsk has lots of corporate sayings about how their employees should behave and act if they want to be successful and part of the Orsk family and culture.  Amy hates all of it and things it is all BS.  She feels beaten down by life so she pretends and goes through the motions so Basil puts through her transfer to a different store.  When Basil approaches her with an opportunity to put through her transfer, catch a potential vandal, and make some extra cash under the table, Amy agrees to work an overnight shift with Basil and coworker Ruth Anne.  During the night the unofficial security team finds 3 unauthorized visitors in the store, and then things start to get weird.  This plays on your emotions and definitely hits all the right chords with the creepy factor.

If you are looking for a horror read with some comic relief during the spooky season this year I highly recommend this!  It has some creepy parts, some weird parts, and I really liked the dark humor and setting.

I received an ARC of this book via Edelweiss+, but opted to listen to the final copy of the audiobook.  The opinions stated in this review are my own.

Review: The Bookworm's Guide to Dating by Emma Hart

Synopsis:

What I wanted for my birthday: Books.

What I got for my birthday: my brother's best friend playing matchmaker.

Let it be known that I, Kinsley Lane, am one hundred percent against being set up with somebody.

And I'm one thousand percent sure that Josh Carter is not the man to find me a boyfriend.

I mean, if I'm so great, why isn't he the one dating me? (For the record, I don't know the answer. That's just what the guy on the internet asked.)

Still, I'll humor him. If I go on his little dates, he'll teach my bookish, introverted self how not to be totally, completely, utterly, unforgivably awkward on every single one of them.

And all I have to do is fall in love with one of the lovely gentlemen he's serving up for me on a silver platter--all of whom fit my very specific guidelines.

Simple, right?

It would be.

If only I could stop falling for Josh.

The Bookworm's Guide to Dating

The Bookworm's Guide to Dating by Emma Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an advanced copy of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was really funny.  I rules at the beginning of each chapter. They were pretty spot on.  This is filled with Emma Hart's trademark snark and humor, and her British sayings.

The banter between all of the characters is exactly what I would expect from lifelong friends.  They are fairly straightforward with their words and don't really hold back.  Everyone is in everyone else's business because they live in a small town where everyone knows everyone else.  I really loved seeing three best friends running a successful bookstore.  The dynamics between the three girls was awesome and I’m looking forward to getting to know Holley and Saylor more in the next two books in the series.  This first installment follows Kinsley, a self proclaimed awkward bookworm looking for love.  She has decided to start dating more, but she knows she is a wreck when it comes to dating.  When her brother’s best friend, Josh, offers to help her out by giving her dating advice, screen matches from various dating apps and set her up on dates, she reluctantly accepts.  Josh has been harboring a secret crush on her for years but out of respect for his friendship with her brother, he has determined it will never work out between them.  When jealousy rears its ugly head as he is coaching Kinsley, things take an unexpected turn in their relationship.

This is filled with plenty of steamy scenes as well as humorous ones.  The scenes with the grandparents and ducks will have you laughing out loud.  The characters are great, and I really enjoy it when the author shows characters having adult conversations about adult situations.  Kinsley and Josh both have to deal with the establishment of their relationship and the repercussions it may have.

I really enjoyed this and I’m looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Review: The Case of the Twisted Truths by Lucy Banks

The Case of the Twisted Truths The Case of the Twisted Truths by Lucy Banks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via Edelweiss in exchanged for an honest review.  This book comes out on October 6, 2020.

This is book four of the Dr. Ribero's Agency of the Supernatural Series.  I thought that this was the final book of the series, but was pleasantly surprised to find that there will be more books.  I really enjoy this series.  The cast of characters is hilarious, and they are terrible at investigating the supernatural and sending them back to whence they came.  This book does end on a cliffhanger, however I'm glad to know that we will finally uncover some of the missing pieces of the backstory.

Like the other books, this follows Kester, a lovable character who kind of stumbles along his newfound life in the realm of the paranormal after his mother's death.  His mother was involved in the paranormal world, but kept it all from Kester and now that he has reunited with his father he has been thrust into the paranormal world and is trying to find his place in it.  Unlike the previous books in the series, where his father's "ghost hunting" agency is actively working on a case, this book is mainly focused on Kester and following up on events of the previous book [book:The Case of the Hidden Daemon|44556436].  Kester is still facing his fear of the spirit world, which terrifies him, trying to learn his father's business, and going to the university to learn about all things paranormal.  While juggling all of his responsibilities he finds himself in the middle of a moral dilemma and he can't tell anyone what he is doing.  Hrschni, the daemon who kidnapped him, has an agenda that Kester doesn't support, but he also has information that Kester is desperate to learn.

I really liked that Kester is finally accepting his fate as a spirit door opener and starting to believe in himself.  He is still scared of his own shadow, but he is starting to find his stride.  I loved seeing him finally stick up to his father when it came to running the business.  Kester's development is slow, but he makes steps in the direction in each book.  It is mentioned in this book that he is only 23 years old, so he is still figuring out who he is as a person and he's had a lot thrown at him in a short amount of time.  While I didn't appreciate the cliffhanger (who does), I do like that we are finally going to find out more about Kester's mysterious mother and perhaps why she kept so many secrets in the next installment.

I love this series and highly recommend it if you are looking for a paranormal, mystery type of series.  This series sort of fits into the cozy genre as there is some comedy and it is fun and easy to read.  I've really come to love the characters and really like the humor.
