April Wrap Up

I will say that April has been a pretty successful reading month.  I finished 10 books and 6 audiobooks.  I reviewed a few ARCs, and I found the OWL read-a-thon, and knocked off several of my reading challenge prompts.  Considering I went on vacation for a week and didn't really read for a whole week and I've been very busy with work and life in general I'm really happy with how much I got done this month.

I'll be posting a wrap up for the OWL read-a-thon challenges later this week, but most of these books fit a prompt or I added to fill a prompt.  I'm enjoying stepping out of my comfort zone with these read-a-thons and challenges to find really great reads.

Books/Ebooks/ARCs

  • Unhappily Ever After (The Librarian #2) by Eric Hobbs
    • Review
    • This was a great retelling of The Wizard of Oz.  I've been meaning to read this forever and I'm glad I finally got to it.  It is darker than the first book, but I still enjoyed it.  The kids have to put the story back the way it was as their good hearted change had unintended consequences in the real world.
  • Hotel Dare by Terry Blas and Claudia Aguirre (illustrator)
    • I won a copy of this via a Book Riot giveaway.  Huge thanks to KaBoom and imprint of Boom Studios for hosting the giveaway and sending me an ARC.  This is a YA graphic novel.  It has some mythology, sci-fi, and my only complaint is that it wasn't long enough.  For kids it was probably the perfect length to keep their attention, I just didn't want it to end, I wanted it to keep going.  That is more of a compliment than a complaint.  This was highly entertaining and beautifully illustrated.
  • The Guest Book by Sarah Blake
    • Review
    • Technically I'm not done with this, but I'll finish it tomorrow.  This is due out on May 7th.  It mainly follows Ogden Milton and his offspring through time starting in 1935.   The timeline and perspective jumps around, I prefer a more linear timeline or for several chapters to stay in one time period or another so I can engage with one set of characters.  I found it hard to stay focused because it switches years or character almost every chapter.  The story and characters were interesting and the history is really well done.
  • Things We Never Said by Samantha Young
    • Review
    • This is the third book in Sam's On Hart's Boardwalk Series.  This is due out on May 7th.  I really loved Dahlia and her story is heartbreaking.  This book was really emotional.  This series makes you feel like you are a part of the community and every time you read one of the books it is like coming home after a long trip.  If you like romance you have to give this a shot.
  • Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
    • Review
    • My son and I both really enjoyed Nevermoor.  He devoured this as soon as I brought it home from the library.  I think he read it in 24 hours and it has been killing him not to tell me what happened.  This is a bit darker as Morrigan learns about wunder and the legacy she is inheriting from past Wundersmiths.  She is also learning the ins and outs of the Wunderous Society and learning to interact with other people.  There is a conspiracy within her unit and Morrigan is again at the center of all of the bad things happening.  I really enjoy this series.  I can't wait for the next one.
  • Time by Penny Reid
    • Review
    • I this came out on April 15th.  This completes The Laws of Physics trilogy.  I'm sad it is over, but I'm happy that Mona and Abram got the ending they deserved.  I'm also holding out that Penny will give us more stories from this series hopefully Allyn and Poe will show up in the future with books of their own.  This covers a ton of issues and wraps up many of the outstanding issues Mona and Abram have with each other and with other people.
  • When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities by Chen Chen
    • I'm not a big poetry reader, but I enjoyed most of these.  The poems are fairly straightforward and I liked that.  I didn't have to struggle to figure out the meaning, it was usually right there in your face what he was talking about.  Sometimes the poems weren't to my taste, but I found his writing style for the most part to flow nicely and his writing to be beautiful.  This fulfils the Read Harder prompt for a collection of poetry that has been published since 2014.
  • Skyward. Vol. 1: My Low-G Life by Joe Henderson, Lee Garbett, and Antonio Fabela
    • I read this for the OWL readathon.  I was watching Hardback Hoarder's Library Haul video and she mentioned it as set in the future which is a prompt I was struggling with.  This is pretty entertaining and the plot is interesting.  Gravity is basically broken and the main character has to fix it in future volumes.  It was a quick read and I'll be checking out volume 2 soon.
  • Star Mage #1 by J.C. De La Torre (author) and Ray Dillon (illustrator)
    • This has a lot of potential.  I'm not a big comic reader so maybe because I've only read omnibuses I felt like this was over before it had a chance to get started.  It was only 24 pages, so by the time we find anything out about the main character it was over.  Fortunately this is a little older and the other issues are available.  This was another OWL prompt read.
  • The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor
    • Review
    • This was an impromptu read, but it fit into my OWL challenge for a book with a red cover.  I was watching  BooksandLala Trash my TBR update and she recommended it because so many of her subscribers said it was a good thriller and that she would like it.  It is a short little book and follows a group of friends in the in the 1986 and 2016 through a series of weird events.  It is told from the perspective of Ed, one of the friends, who has his own strange experience.  It is captivating and I didn't want to put down this creepy, thriller.

Audiobooks

  • City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
    • I really enjoyed this.  If you are looking for a middle grade/YA ghost story I recommend this.  It isn't very long, but I really enjoyed it.  I can't wait for the next one.  This installment is set in Scotland and the main character can travel between the world of the living and the dead.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
    • I'm so glad I finally took the time to enjoy this.  It was such an impactful book.  It was hard to listen to at times, but the writing is beautiful and the message is so important.  I now understand why it is the winner of so many awards and the #1 book on The Great American Reads list.  The audio is excellent, I highly recommend it.
  • Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
    • I listened to this right after To Kill a Mockingbird and I don't think it is as good.  As a sequel it just doesn't stand up.  The plot doesn't always match up and the message just isn't as good.  Knowing that this was written first and never intended to be published by the author that makes a lot of sense.  Lee's writing is beautiful and the narration is wonderful.  Had I not read them back to back, this might have been OK, but it just isn't as good as Mockingbird and you can tell it was written first and just isn't as good.
  • The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
    • I love this series.  I was worried Vasya wasn't going to play a part in the beginning, but this tale involves her brother and sister as much as it does her.  We get to know Sasha and Olga a bit more as well as many other characters.  Vasya is still up to her antics of not being a prim and proper maiden and getting herself into predicaments.  I still love the folklore behind this series and can't wait for the next one.
  • Running the Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian by Avi Steinberg
    • This fulfils the prompt for a book written in prison.  I don't think he actually wrote this while he was working in the prison, but we are going with it.  I also read Dr. King's Letter from Birmingham Jail, so I'm covered there.  This is a memoir of a very well educated, Orthodox Jewish man, who after giving up his faith finds himself needing a job that pays better than the one he's got.  He applies to be a prison librarian, and these are the tales which are quite raw and real of his experience there.  The narrator does quite a great job of capturing the personalities of the inmates.
  • The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
    • This has gotten a ton of hype.  I admit I didn't know much about the plot, but I kept hearing how scary it was.  This is a work of literary fiction, and while there are plenty of harsh conditions and graphic situations (read trigger warnings) this is by no means a horror novel.  The characters experience very real fear based on the things they are experiencing in the wild Alaskan territory.  I'm not a big literary fiction reader and while this is extremely well written it just isn't the type of book I prefer.  It is very good, just not the type of book I normally go for.

Excerpt:

I wrapped my arms around her body, lifted her off the ground, and kissed her lips.

She was warm, and soft, and tasted like peppermint and honey. I bit back a groan.

God, she felt good. Great. Celestial. Heavenly. I may have surprised her, but she responded immediately, enthusiastically, twisting her arms around my neck, opening her mouth and welcoming the invasion of mine.

It wasn’t enough.

It was a crumb, and I was starving. Desire—to tighten my hold, devour, take, keep, cherish, to never let her go—obscured thought and sight, and I slipped a hand under her shirt to touch the silky skin of her back, sliding my fingers upward until they rested under her bra strap.

Mona lifted her chin, breaking our mouths apart, and I kissed the point of it, the elegant line of her jaw, the tender spot beneath her ear, the hot skin where Mona’s graceful neck met the slope of her shoulder. I was so hungry for her, I couldn’t stop myself from tasting every exposed inch.

“Abram,” she said, her voice a breathless, disbelieving whisper, followed by a little laugh. Her fingers flexed at the back of my neck, pressing me closer. Every part of my body hummed and vibrated, unable to contain the immensity of now, of this divine feeling.

“You’re here,” she said, her soft voice full of wonder and happiness, soothing the ravenous panic holding me hostage for the past six days. It had been a peculiar kind of madness, not being able to reach her while pretending all was fine, pretending she didn’t occupy my mind every second of the day. But receding now, it left a new kind of turmoil and urgency in its wake.

We had no time.

No, I corrected myself, We have time. We have the rest of our lives.

“I need your fu—your phone number.” I spoke gruffly against her neck, squeezing my eyes shut and breathing her in, again and again, the heat and sweetness of Mona.

I’d missed her, and that was a gross understatement. I’d been speeding toward this moment for days and being with her now felt like the aftermath of a head-on collision. Stupefied, frantic, but determined to enjoy every shared second remaining. My hands were shaking.

We have time. Calm down. Calm down.

Mona laughed lightly, the sound melodic, beautiful, and she pressed a kiss under my ear. “Why didn’t you just ask Leo? Or send me an email?”

Leo.

I worked to keep the darkness of my thoughts from showing on my face as I leaned away, letting her slide to the ground but unwilling to release her fully, fisting my unsteady hands into her T-shirt. “I couldn’t find an email for you anywhere, and neither could Marie. She tried calling your department for me. They told her all media requests had to go through the PR department at the university and it would take two weeks to a month for a response.”

“Ah, that’s true. My email is on lockdown, otherwise it gets out of hand.” She nodded contritely. “But what about Leo?”

“Leo.” I forced my jaw to relax and I lowered my voice but couldn’t completely disguise the intensity of my wrath. “Leo wouldn’t give me your number.”

Mona’s hand moved to my face, her palm pressed against my cheek, the pads of her fingers softly stroking my beard. “What? Are you serious?”

“Yes,” I ground out. “He said he was doing me a favor. So I flew to LA.”

“You flew to LA?” I felt her body tense, and the moment realization dawned, her beautiful eyes growing impossibly large as they moved over my face. “You must be so tired and—but I wasn’t in LA, I was—”

“Here. Yes. I found that out yesterday when I stopped by your department at Caltech and they told me you weren’t due back until Friday,” I rushed to explain, multitasking, using the time to devour the sight of her, soak and submerge in the reality of being here with her.

Calm down. We. Have. Time.

Review: Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really love this series. I'm picky about my middle grade reads, but this gets my seal of approval and my 11 year old devoured this in about a day and a half.  I think he gets mad that school gets in the way of his reading time.  I feel that way about work sometimes, but responsibility always wins out.

I'm using this for my OWL Reading Challenge Potions, Next Ingredient: Sequel prompt.  If you don't know what I'm talking about you can check out my TBR post here

This picks up where Nevermoor left off, Morrigan has discovered that she is a Wundersmith and allowed to stay in Nevermoor. She is officially part of the Wundrous Society, but she isn't really sure what either of those things means. Her patron, Jupiter, isn't exactly open with the information on what Morrigan's future holds or what she will find inside the gates of the Society. All she knows is that she may learn what it means to be a Wundersmith and that she may finally have the family she has always wanted within her unit at the Society.

Her unit, 919 as they are dubbed, are challenged at every turn when they find out what Morrigan really is. They are tasked with keeping her secret and trusting that she won't turn evil on them. This tests the bonds of trust and friendship. In the meantime, Morrigan must learn the history of Wundersmiths in her one and only class at the Society. The history as she quickly comes to learn is very biased. As strange and bad things keep happening around Morrigan, which she is kind of used to, Morrigan is determined to find out who is causing all of the bad things to happen to her group and the people of the Society. She knows she didn't cause them but they all started when she showed up at the Society. She wants to help Jupiter uncover the truth and find the culprit. Ezra Squall also plays a part in this darker sequel, but he has motives of his own. He wants Morrigan to become a powerful Wundersmith, but he hints at something other than himself as danger to Morrigan and her friends.

This sequel was a little darker than the first book but it was still whimsical and fun. I really love the creativity that went into creating the world and the characters. I do wish the whole use of Wunder was a little more flushed out but I think this book was just setting that up. I think or at least I hope we will get more into that in the next one as Morrigan begins to study the Wretched Arts in school. This doesn't really end on a cliffhanger, but it hints at more to come but doesn't say what so it wraps up pretty neatly with the promise of more to come and another adventure for another day. I'm really excited to see what Morrigan and the kids of 919 get up to in the next installment.

EXCERPT #1-
Fenton is standing in front of the windows that line this room too. One hand is pressed against the glass, the other holding a phone to his ear. He looks in complete control, dominating, and it makes my mouth water. His charcoal grey suit is stretched across his wide shoulders, his legs shoulder-width apart. It’s the sexiest thing I have ever seen. Lord help me when he turns around. The door closes softly behind me. As if in slow motion, Fenton turns. The setting sun is to his back, almost like the universe is showcasing his splendor in case there was any doubt of his perfection. He slips one hand in his pocket, a slow smile spreading across his face. “I’ll call you later,” he says into the phone and puts it in his pocket too. All I can do is take him in. He’s doing the same as his gaze caresses me from head to toe. Even from the other side of the room, I can feel him skirting my curves, skimming my jawline. It’s visual intercourse, if that’s even a thing, and I’m ready to climax. The top button of his shirt is undone, his tie gone. A dark belt wraps his narrow waist, giving him a look of sophistication. His jaw has a spattering of stubble and I wonder what it would feel like beneath my fingers. The energy in the room crackles as he draws near. My breathing is rapid-firing and I take a deep breath to try to sort it out before he reaches me. I fumble with what to say and what to do. I’m not the smoothest on dates anyway, but with this Adonis? God almighty. I don’t know him well enough to know how to even address him. Come to think of it, I know three things: his name, he’s gorgeous, and he currently holds all the power. And I’m ready to remove all of my clothing. So I guess that makes it four.

EXCERPT #2-
Presley, ever on her game, flips her hair before extending a hand. “You’re the man I’m looking for.” If I could react, I’d roll my eyes at her innuendo. Instead, I just stare like a cartoon character. There are probably little hearts extending from my pupils, exploding right above his head. “I might be,” he says, looking at Presley. “Do you want my name or something to confirm it?” she hints. “Well,” he drawls, his voice as luxurious as Presley made it out to be, “I believe you said it was your friend’s phone. So if that’s the case, I think it’s her name I should get.” Presley’s jaw drops at the same time as mine. They both look at me. “If you just show it to me, I can tell you if it’s mine,” I half stutter. His smirk deepens. “I’m pretty certain it’s yours. Your pictures are on the camera roll.” “You looked at my pictures?” I gasp, my cheeks heating. “You had no right to do that!” “How else could I be sure the right person came to pick it up?” He has a point, but I still don’t agree. Yet I don’t want to argue. Not at least until I have my phone. It feels like such an invasion of privacy and I should be offended, or at least, mock-offended, but I’m really not. Not even when I try to dig deep to find the feelings. “Thank you for finding it and tracking me down. Can I have it back now?” I ask. He digs a large hand into his pocket, too near his cock for my own good, and retrieves it. “Thank you,” I whisper. My fingertips brush his palm as I take it. The contact sends shivers down my spine. “It’s my pleasure.”
Chapter One

Fenton

“Tell him I got his message yesterday and I don’t need him to blow me. But thank him for the offer.”
Grabbing the nearest shopping cart and sliding it in front of me, I toggle the phone against my shoulder. It nearly slides off my rigid muscles, a mix of workout fatigue and work stress setting up shop across my back.
Duke sighs through the phone, not even pretending to hide his frustration. “Fenton, that’s not true,” he says, exasperation thick in his voice. “He didn’t ask to blow you.”
“Obviously it’s not fucking true. I just want to hear him have to deny it.”
“You know what? Just forget I called. I’ll come up with a response myself.”
“That’s probably the best idea you’ve had yet.”
Duke sighs again, louder this time. I’m sure I’ve been an asshole to deal with since I hired him, but I gave him plenty of warning what he was getting into. This entire situation, the one he was hired to deal with, has been a complete clusterfuck from the start. There’s nothing more vexing than being able to fix a problem and having your hands tied behind your back while being needled that the problem exists. I know it exists. I’m keenly aware and no one wants it fixed more than me.
“I’ll just tell them the status hasn’t changed.”
“I could’ve taken care of this,” I bite out.
“I know. I know.”
“And they wouldn’t let me.”
“I. Know.”
“I know you know. Try to impart some of that knowledge to them. I’m playing by their rules right now, but I’m starting to lose patience with their—”
“Fenton, you have to play by their rules. Otherwise—”
“I’m heading into the store,” I interrupt. “The service is going to get shitty.”
“Talk soon,” Duke says, ready to end the conversation anyway, and the line clicks off. I shove my phone into the pocket of my black athletic pants. My jaw pulses, the buzz from this morning’s workout now vanished.
Ignoring the eyes of an uptight man perusing the apples, I skirt my cart left to avoid interaction. I have no idea why I chose today of all days to do my own grocery shopping. I could’ve waited three damn days until my housekeeper gets back from vacation.
Steering clear of the apples and the negative energy rolling off the shopper, I head towards the bananas. I need to find the optimism I had five minutes ago before Duke called from the office and ruined my Saturday morning.
The bananas are organic and perfectly ripe, so I pluck a bunch off the podium. I start to push away, but the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. A ruffle of unease scatters through my subconscious. I pause mid-step and glance around the store. People mill about, minding their own business, nothing out of the ordinary. I start to push away again when I spy the offender. A black piece of plastic peeks out from behind a bundle of bananas, the overhead light ricocheting off it and catching my eye.
I reach behind the produce and pull out a black cell phone. Turning it over in my hand, it looks no worse for wear. I press the round button on the bottom and the screen lights up.
Staring back at me are two gorgeous girls, probably a couple of years younger than me. Mid-twenties, I’d say. The dark-headed one is flashing a peace sign in a barely there white bikini. She’s hot as fuck. But it’s the blonde that draws my attention. She sits crossed-legged in shorts and a tank top on the beach, her hair falling around her narrow shoulders. Her body is covered, her stance demure, but there’s something striking about her that I can’t pinpoint. I almost can’t look away. Her blue-green eyes taunt me, tease me with a look that’s downright beguiling. The touches of vulnerability hidden behind her confidence intrigue me, make me want to hear her voice and know what she’s thinking.
Laughing at my ridiculousness despite the heat rolling in my blood, I skim the store again. No one seems to be searching for the phone.
I glance back down and my gaze goes immediately to the blonde. The curve of her hip has my thumb gliding over the screen.
I should turn the phone in to management. It’s the logical, responsible thing to do.
My feet don’t move.
Losing your phone in the bananas doesn’t exactly shout responsibility.
Taking a deep breath, I ponder my options. I can turn it in to Lost and Found and hope that they actually give it to her if she comes looking. Or . . . I could try to get in touch with her myself.
Keep telling yourself you’re playing the Good Samaritan.
Leaning against the produce display, I do a quick analysis. The odds of her finding it at the Help Desk aren’t great. Maybe fifty-fifty. Some bagger boy will probably see the lock screen and take it to the bathroom and jerk off. The odds of that are phenomenal. The odds of me breaking the passcode aren’t great either, but if possible, would greatly increase her chances of getting it back.
And the chance for me to see those eyes in person.
I type in 0000.
“Try again” flashes on the screen.
1234.
“Try again.”
Steering the cart with my elbows towards the customer service desk, I run through possible passwords before I commit to my final try. I have one more chance before it locks me out for good and I have no choice but to turn it over to Bagger Boy and his bathroom break.
I go for 1111, another overused password.
It makes a clicking sound and the lock screen opens. The phone toggles in my hands, my jaw dropping in disbelief. It worked. The home screen is filled with apps over shiny gold wallpaper, waiting to be explored.
Should I or shouldn’t I?
My thumb glances over the photo album and I see the first photo.
I definitely should.

Review: Time by Penny Reid

Time Time by Penny Reid
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Penny and team for providing me the opportunity to review the entire series.  This was released on April 15, 2019.  I was on vacation with my family in Washington D.C. when this popped up on my Kindle and I immediately dropped everything else I was reading to read this instead.  I wasn't disappointed.

This is the final installment of The Laws of Physics series, fans of Mona and Abram will not be disappointed. I really feel like they got the ending they needed. The heavy topics that needed to be disclosed and discussed between them before they could really and truly move forward with their relationship were finally put out into the open. I also give Marie and Gabby lots of kudos for making some of those conversations happen. Also Marie is my favorite character from Knitting in the City and she is a great big sister.

This particular installment is focused on the characters and the development of their relationship and both of them as individuals. This is not the angst ridden romance that some expected, but I'm OK with that. This was a much more realistic portrayal of a relationship where things are pretty good most of the time, but you still have to work through things all of the time to get your relationship to work. We don't all live in a fairytale, and neither do our characters. They both have baggage and they have to work thought it to make their relationship work for them. Penny tackles a ton of issues in this book and as always they are well written, respectful of the content, and well researched. Some of the issues discussed are sexual harassment of men by women, sexual harassment and assault of women by men, women having to work harder in science and math professions because they are women, neglectful parents and loved ones, dealing with your feelings, and I'm sure I'm missing some because this little book packed quite the punch.

If you have enjoyed the previous installments I recommend this one. I love Penny's books and that is no secret. I love that we get cameo's from characters from the other books. I'm still holding out that Penny will give us Allyn and Poe's stories at some point in the future.

Review: Things We Never Said by Samantha Young

Things We Never Said Things We Never Said by Samantha Young
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an advanced copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.  This will be released May 7, 2019.

I've always loved Dahlia's character, and I am really excited that we finally get her story. She is Bailey Hartwell's best friend and a local artist and shop owner on the boardwalk in Hartwell. We've gotten to know her a bit in the previous two books, but only as a side character. Here we get all of the details about why she's closed off and detached. We come to understand why she is estranged from her family and what really happened to her. Her story is an emotional one, I really felt for her throughout the book.

Dahlia comes from a big Irish family in Boston. In her early 20's she met the man of her dreams, Michael, but things never seemed to fall into place for them to get together. When they finally decide to take a chance on their relationship, tragedy strikes leaving Dahlia feeling guilty and unable to cope. In order to deal with her demons, Dahlia runs away to Hartwell to start over without her family or Michael. No one but her father knows where she is for 9 years as she rebuilds a life for herself and deals with some of the things that have happened to her. Fast forward 9 years to the present, and Michael runs into Dahlia in Hartwell and our story unfolds. Dahlia must return to Boston to help support her father in his time of need, she also must face her siblings and tell them the whole truth about why she left and never came back. She also decides she needs to face Michael and tell him atleast part of the truth because she's never gotten over him. Unfortunately, she has so many fears keeping her away from truly letting him into her heart and her life.

Michael has never gotten over Dahlia. He doesn't deal well with their first several encounters saying some pretty hateful things to her. I could have done without that part. Dahlia eventually sticks up for herself and their explosive connection reignites. As they begin to reconnect and Michael learns the truth of why Dahlia left him, it becomes clear that she is holding back from a more permanent connection. He is determined to win her for good.

I really loved this, it took me about 24 hours to finish. I just couldn't put it down. I loved the characters. There was some dialogue that I could have done without, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. It fit well with the series and the setting. I hope there are more books to the series to come in the future, there are a few more characters we need to get to know. If you like heartbreaking stories, with a romance that was just meant to be, I highly recommend this one. I really enjoy this series. I feel like a member of the community and like I know everyone when I'm reading this series. It is like a warm hug coming back to Hart's Boardwalk.

Review: Unhappily Ever After by Eric Hobbs

Unhappily Ever After Unhappily Ever After by Eric Hobbs
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have had a copy of this for review forever.  The author was kind enough to provide all three books in exchange for an honest review.  I have a copy of the conclusion and I'm really looking forward to finding out how it all ends.

This is the sequel to Little Boy Lost. We follow Taylor and Wesley after they were lost in the library the day before and they come to find out that their actions the day before have had consequences not only in Oz but in their own world as well. They head back to the library to find The Librarian to fix what they have broken and reset the story and get their lives back. When they arrive at the library, the find that the Librarian has already returned to Oz to set things to rights, but his assistant Hope is there to help them. Hope isn't exactly helpful though. Taylor figures out what she needs to do to fix her mistakes from the previous day and won't let anyone stop her.

Also in Oz are Randy and Douglas and Bones, who have their own agenda. I'm still not 100% clear on what Douglas is up to, but I'm hopeful that will be all cleared up in book 3. Bones and Randy don't really play much of a part in this Wizard of Oz retelling. This is definitely darker than the first book which was fun and whimsical. This has a more YA feel while the first one had a more middle grade feel. Then again I haven't read the original Oz books so I'm not sure how dark or violent it is so I'm not sure if it compares.

I like the original take on a classic tale. The characters are decent and the friendship between Wes and Taylor is great. This does end on a cliffhanger like book 1, but I do feel like the story this book has to tell was complete. They finished what they set out to do, and while there is more to tell this part of the story was told. Book 3 is out now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the tale ends.
