Review: Under Pressure

Under Pressure Under Pressure by Allie Winters
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a steamy new adult romance with two unlikely partners. Mia and Tyler are up for the same internship, but their professor decides that both of their research proposals have merit and that they are similar enough that should work together and combine their efforts. This isn't what either of them wants, but it is an opportunity the would be stupid to refuse. Both of them are pyschology majors with different interests in the field, but a prestigious internship and published paper as an undergrad will look great on their resumes.

Tyler doesn't work well with others. He has some emotional baggage from his childhood, which makes it interesting that he's chosen psychology as a career. He doesn't like to talk about his feelings, open up to others, or get close to anyone, but he can't help but let down his walls just a little when it comes to Mia. She is riddled with self-doubt and has anxiety. The one person she doesn't take crap from is Tyler. She lets other people walk over her, but when it comes to Tyler she doesn't let him get away with being selfish and mean, she speaks up for herself and expects that in turn he treat her as his equal when it comes to their research. As they get to know more about each other, a friendship forms and they realize they is an attraction there.

I really appreciated the open dialogue about mental health and that it is OK to seek help for anxiety and therapy when you need to work through something. I also liked that they were researching alternative therapy for helping with anxiety and stress. I think alternative options like biofeedback, meditation, exercise, etc are all really excellent options to helping with stress and anxiety. Let's face it stress and anxiety levels are elevated for everyone after the year we've had so finding a self care routine is more critical than ever.

We see a ton of character development on Tyler's side. Mia does come out of her shell as she explores things with Tyler and becomes more comfortable standing up for herself with him. She learns to ask for the things she wants and needs from others instead of letting it go for the sake of peace and avoiding confrontation. I would have liked to see more of her journey with anxiety discussed a bit more. She mentions that she had been treated in the past and her inner dialogue talks about it, but it felt secondary to the rest of the story. The main focus on the character development is on Tyler and his childhood trauma that he doesn't want to deal with and why he doesn't want to develop relationships.

This was a fun new adult romance. This is by far probably the steamiest of the Smartypants books in the collection. If you like college romances I'd give this one a go, it is kind of a friends to lovers with a twist. I'm looking forward to exploring more from this author in the future.

Excerpt

“Watch it,” I mumbled as I was steadied by strong hands on my shoulders. Then I remembered to be nice and tried to scoot to the side.

The arms held me gently in place. When I looked up, glaring pointedly, he dropped them. It was Mr. Eye Contact from across the room. A little thrill tickled the back of my knees. He was damn fine this close up. Not my taste, but definitely a certain appeal. Like, if I wanted to know someone with a yacht to “summer on,” he’d be my type.

His eyes were startlingly blue. His hair was this dark shade of blond, thick waves swept back with lighter tips that looked as though it had been bleached naturally by the sun. A smile quirked his mouth and my focus moved there. He had soft crinkles around the corners of his eyes and a natural tan that spoke of time outside.

He said something with the tilt of his head and a soft smile on his lips. I blinked away, wondering if my mouth had been hanging open catching flies as I took him in.

“What?” I yelled and pointed to my ear. The band had just started back up.

His smile grew to expose that two front teeth protruded just a little. It was a disarmingly charming flaw, like a puppy with just one floppy ear. His gaze moved over the exposed skin of my neck and shoulders under my tank top, seemingly studying the tattoos.

I wasn’t knocking my edgy looks, but I typically didn’t attract men who could have been plucked straight from an Ivy League fraternity mixer. At least the collar of his black button-up wasn’t popped. And he wore nice sneakers and jeans, not boat shoes and pink shorts. Okay, so he wasn’t preppy per se, but squeaky? Like he’d hurt my teeth to take a bite out of. He didn’t even have a beard, for crying out loud. Not to box this guy in, but guys like this did not go for girls like me. Then again, sometimes there were the guys who liked to “slum it” with the easy small-town girls from Green Valley.

Mr. Eye Contact leaned closer. He smelled like a shower after a hard workout. It was like the cleansing smell of a spring morning after working all night at the Dragon Bar. My jaw was clenched tight, thinking about taking a bite out of him again.

“Dance?” he asked. His voice had a rich and deep timbre that sent a tiny shudder down my spine.

His confidence was sexy without being overwhelming. He tucked his hands deep into his pockets and waited patiently as I took him in, studying him head to toe. There was no pressure in his question. I suspected if I said no, he’d walk away without another word. I told myself I wanted to dance alone but suddenly I wasn’t so sure. Wouldn’t it be nice to have hands on me? Wouldn’t it be an escape to just be a woman dancing with a man to good music?

Shocking myself, I realized I was interested. So I felt a zing for this man? It didn’t mean anything. It meant that my warning system wasn’t going off. It meant that I was a person who wanted to dance. It didn’t have to mean anything.

He extended his hand. I bit my lip. I was here to celebrate my hard work. It was one night before an early flight home tomorrow.

“What the hell?” I said unheard in the club.

I slid my hand into his. His hand was not the buttery-soft warmth of an Ivy Leaguer. His hand was calloused and hot. What might it feel like to have those rough palms gripping the tender skin of my hips?

He pulled me only long enough to let me pass, then he let me lead the way to the floor. As I made my way to the other dancers, I felt his gaze on my backside like the vibration of a motorcycle. I risked a glance over my shoulder. His focus returned to mine as he licked his bottom lip.

“Lord, help me,” I mumbled to myself.

Good thing it was just one night and just one dance. This guy would be way too easy to fall for. But what could one dance with a stranger hurt?

Review: Kiss Me First by Anna B. Doe

Kiss Me First Kiss Me First by Anna B. Doe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This comes out on March 12, 2021.

I really enjoyed this. It is a prequel to the other Blairwood University books and features Emmet and Kate who are a side couple in Kiss To Conquer and Kiss To Forget. They are the established couple mentioned in the friend group from the other books. This is the story of how they met and fell in love. This takes place during their junior year in high school and it is fairly tame when it comes to adult content. There are some mature themes, and there are a few sex scenes but it isn't overly graphic. I would still consider it New Adult/Adult as far as the intended audience.

I really loved the character development in this. Kate is the overprotective big sister, who has not had a good example set for her when it comes to relationships in general. Having moved around alot for her mom's career and selfish whims, Kate was never really able to develop lasting friendships. Her mother never had a stable relationship so Kate and her younger sister Penny never had a male role model to show them what a healthy relationship looks like between a man and a woman, so when Kate meets Emmett on her first day of school after moving in with her Aunt Mabel, she isn't sure what to do with him. Kate doesn't want friends or a boyfriend, she just wants to start fresh and take care of Penny. Fortunately for Kate, Emmett and Becky know what is best for her and immediately take her in and befriend her. I loved that Emmett was willing to wait for Kate to be ready for a relationship and just be friends Kate and Penny have been through a lot and seeing them come through all of that into lovely young women, it definitely made me choke up a few times.

I really loved this! I read most of it in one sitting and just couldn't put it down. It was such a wonderful experience watching Kate and Emmett's relationship develop. If you like more mature high school romances, sports romances (there is a little football in here), and friends to lovers this is the story for you.

Review: Weights of Wrath

Weights of Wrath Weights of Wrath by M.E. Carter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Joey is the ridiculously funny trainer at Weight Expectations, if you have read Weight Expectations or Cutie and the Beast you will remember him. He is always bantering with Abel, the other trainer, and the older ladies from the exercise classes at the gym. Joey is a pretty happy go lucky, live life to it's fullest, take things as they come kind of guy, so when Cherise the stripper he had a one night stand with tells him she's pregnant he's thrilled about it. Cherise aka Rosalind isn't so thrilled. She's worked hard to gain independence from her family and everyone else. She makes good money and has a pretty fabulous body. Having a baby was not in her plans right now. Since life has decided to change her plans for her she has to work together with Joey to figure out a co-parenting situation that works for both of them.

This is filled with banter and humor, and some pretty ridiculous situations. Joey and Rosalind's relationship was not traditional in any way but they made it work. Their personalities are so opposite that you'd never think that they would work together but this is one case where their opposing personalities really do compliment each other. Their relationship as a couple is fairly slow burn, and they have some communication issues, but once they figure each other out it is hard not to cheer for them. I think this was a great realistic portrayal of a couple trying to figure out real things. They had to talk about money, child birth, family, and their feelings. I really appreciate when that ends up on the page.

I think M.E. Carter did a great job putting the fears and insecurities that we all have as first time parents, and even now with soon to be teenagers on the page. These kids really should come with a manual or something. I still remember finding out I was pregnant, unexpectedly, being in denial and telling my husband I wasn't ready yet. Fortunately you have lots of time to come to grips, get prepared, and figure it out. I think Elliot gave some great advice about babies and kids in the book. We are all just winging it and hoping not to screw up.

About M.E. Carter

My name is M.E. Carter and I have no idea how I ended up writing books. I’m more of a story teller (the more exaggerated the better) and I happen to know people who helped me get those stories on paper. I love reading (read almost 200 books last year), hate working out (but I do it anyway because my trainer makes me), love food (but hate what it does to my butt) and love traveling to non-touristy places most people never see. I live in Houston with my four kids, Mary, Elizabeth, Carter and Bug, who was just a twinkle in my eye when I came up with my pen name. Yeah, I’ll probably have to pay for his therapy someday for being left out.

Review: Street Smart by Aly Stiles

Street Smart Street Smart by Aly Stiles
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun rom-com with a bit of office espionage.

When Marcos finds himself selected for a prestigious internship program at a subsidiary of the famed Sandeke Telecom (yes the same Sandeke's from Elements of Chemistry from the Pennyverse), he finds himself caught up in a world he never expected to be a part of. Marcos has worked his way up from the foster care system through somewhat unconventional means to earn an Ivy League degree and this internship. He doesn't fit in with those from affluent backgrounds who throw around money and drop names of senators and famous people. Marcos is instantly drawn to his boss Eva who happens to be the CEO's daughter, so when she "accidentally" sends him some suspicious files that may indicate corporate espionage on the part of Denver Sandeke against his son Martin's new startup venture, Marcos isn't sure what to do. He and Eva decide that they are going to take on the man and have some fun doing it.

There were some really funny moments in this. Chad the other intern was hilarious, his final presentation was amazing! The HR lady was also pretty funny, you might think she was overly ridiculous and offensive but I can tell you from personal experience in the corporate world, this kind of stuff actually happens. It doesn't excuse her behavior, but it does shine a light on the fact that this kind of dumb stuff really does happen to people and it shouldn't. I loved that Marcos and Eva's relationship while a bit insta-lovey was also based on respect and their attraction to each other's intelligence. Eva was a bit dumbstruck at times by her attraction to Marcos which made her act a bit silly, but I think that is something we can all relate to. I also appreciated that Marcos stuck to his guns and was willing to sacrifice money and position for his values.

I'm looking forward to checking out more from this author as this is my first book from Aly Stiles. this is a great addition to the Smartypants lineup.
