Girls Like Us by Cristina Alger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was provided an advanced copy of this book via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This was published on July 2, 2019.
I've been reading a lot of thrillers lately, and this is another one that reads much like an episode of a Criminal Minds or any other crime TV show. This actually had more of the feel of a true crime show as FBI agent Nell Flynn returns home for her father's funeral. Nell's dad was a homicide detective, and as she begins to deal with his estate and is asked by his partner Lee to consult on an active serial murder case she discovers some things that just don't add up. Nell and her dad Marty, didn't have the best relationship, and as she uncovers more details on the murder investigation she's been pulled into, her dad begins to look like a prime suspect or like someone who was deeply involved in the case and like the girls they've uncovered got himself murdered for it. Nell quickly becomes invested in the case and uses her skills as a BAU agent to quickly figure out what is really going on and finds herself at the center of a much bigger ring of crime than she could have ever expected.
Nell is forced to deal with her own baggage with her dad, her mother's murder when she was a child, and she has to figure out who she can really trust. I don't want to spoil this too much as it is a fairly well put together thriller/mystery. It has some predictable plot points, and a few I didn't see coming. While I didn't find Nell completely likable as a main character, didn't feel you were supposed to find her to be. She was rough around the edges, tough, and fit the role well. This book kept me engaged and interested in the plot, but I did find the pacing to be a little slow. I like my thrillers to be a little more suspenseful and action packed versus this which is a bit more procedural. Overall this is well put together and I enjoyed it.
