Review: All Fired Up by Allie Winters

All Fired Up All Fired Up by Allie Winters
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

This was a super fun opposites attract, enemies to lovers romance.  As with all of the books in the series this can be read as a complete standalone.  There are some characters present from other books in the series, however you don't need to read those before diving into this one.

This follows Hunter and Madeline as they train to be volunteer firefighters.  They both have their reasons for signing up, and they both face challenges with the training.  Madeline is book smart, while Hunter excels with the physical challenges.  They went to high school together, and because his family is part of the local biker gang she always thought he was up to no good as well.  Hunter does what he can to stay on the straight and narrow, but Madeline gets under his skin so he decides to knock her down a peg and a prank war ensues.  The fire chief gets wind of their shenanigans and pairs them up for the remainder of the training with the stipulation that both of them pass or they both fail when it comes to test taking time.  Naturally this frustrates both of them, but it forces them to face each other and air their greivances.  In order to pass the exams at the end of training, they both have to help each other with what they are best at.  Because they are spending so much time together, it gives them time to get to know one another and act on the attraction that has been building between them.

I thought Hunter and Madeline had great chemistry and banter.  Hunter had an undiagnosed learning disability, which made him feel inferior and unworthy.  Given his family situation that is understandable, and really unfortunate.  Madeline on the other hand is very stubborn, she has a hard time accepting help and telling people when she needs something.  She learns through training that she can't do everything on her own, and she has to be part of a team to be successful.  It isn't failing if she asks for help or confronts someone.  Both characters show great growth in this story.  This has some great moments of levity mixed with humor from the pranks balanced with the romance.

This is another great addition to the Smartypants catalogue!

Review: Package Makes Perfect by Lauren Connolly

Package Makes Perfect Package Makes Perfect by Lauren Connolly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

I can't tell you how much I appreciated having a veteran female main character!  As a veteran myself, you don't often see women in the military unless it is a sci-fi book.  I really appreciated seeing a disabled veteran as a main character in a romance novel.  Robin was awesome, I loved her so much.  I also really loved Arthur.  He is a grumpy, bear of a mailman who is really a big old softy once you get to know him.  Arthur is a man of few words, but the ones he does say have meaning.  When Robin catches her boyfriend who happens to be Arthur's cousin cheating on her, Arthur is there to comfort her and help her pick up the pieces.  They form a pact to make Robin's now ex jealous by fake dating, but that has its own complications when their fake feelings take a turn into reality.

Robin and Arthur have a bit of a complicated situation-ship as they both navigate feelings, work, and family stuff.  The both have a hard time communicating what they want in general, so when it comes to love, they both fumble a bit.  They have some really cute moments together which are also met with some great spicy scenes and some really great pearls of wisdom.  I really enjoyed getting to know them.

As with all of the books in the series this reads as a complete standalone.  It does feature characters from other books in the series, however you can read them in any order.

Review: Young Buck by Kilby Blades

Young Buck Young Buck by Kilby Blades
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

This is a cute age gap romance following tenacious Loretta, a part time crime scene investigator by day with the local sheriff's department and a personal investigator by night. Her PI business specializes in scorned women and she keeps their identities and personal well being safe. Loretta knows what it is like to be hurt by an unfaithful husband, so protecting these women and their dignity is very important to her. Enter Green Valley Fire Department's newest Lieutenant, Buck Rodgers and Loretta's new neighbor. Their first meeting is a comedy of errors, but Buck and Loretta have instant chemistry. Loretta isn't interested in a relationship, let alone with a hot fireman 10 years younger than her. Buck is determined to wear her down with his flirting and firehouse cooking skills.

Just as Buck and Loretta begin to grow closer, he finds he needs her PI skills to investigate something strange going on with his own mother. As the two of them look into what she is up to, Buck uncovers a messy family situation that he isn't sure how to handle. As he's processing his own dark family secrets he manages to spoil things with Loretta in the process. She isn't willing to let what appears to be Buck's immaturity ruin her life plans that she has worked so hard to obtain. Will Buck be able to protect Loretta from his family drama and win her back before it is too late?

I enjoyed Buck and Loretta as well as the supporting cast of characters. They both had good character development, and I thought they had good chemistry. This is a bit on the slower burn side as all of the threads of the story come together, but every thing does come together nicely in the end. This tackled some really great topics as well. As with all of the Smartypants Universe books this reads as a complete standalone. View all my reviews

Audiobook: Coming this fall!

Excerpt

He cleared his throat and glanced back toward the door. “No. This is it. I’d better go. Jake’s in the truck.”

“Yeah. I was standing right here when you told him to go wait in it two minutes ago.”

He gave me that confused expression again, but I don’t know why. He was the one stating the obvious.

“Right.” He turned and marched for the door.

I followed him toward the exit. “Did you want to pay for that? Or were you planning on stealing it?”

“Huh?” he turned near the door.

I was used to flustering people, particularly men, so this didn’t surprise me.

“You already paid Kayla?” I pointed to the jar in his hand.

“Oh, hell.” He shook his head and met me at the register.

I glanced out the window to check on Jake. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a big Chevy next to my Ford-150. After ringing Wade up, I gave him his change then bagged his jar of moonshine.

“You sure you don’t want me to pay for that broken jar?” he asked. “I don’t know why, but I feel like you’re covering for Jake. Kids gotta learn to pay when they make mistakes.”

“I’m sure you’re absolutely correct and know much more about parenting than I do, seeing as I am not a parent. But don’t you worry your pretty little head about it. It’s all good.”

Again, he gave me that blank-faced, puzzled expression as I handed over his moonshine in a paper bag and beamed brightly up at him.

“You’re a funny kind of woman, Marly.”

“You better believe it. I put the fun in funny.” I winked.

He shook his head and took the bag, but I swear I saw him actually crack a smile before he ducked his chin and strolled out to his truck.

Kayla joined me behind the counter while we both watched him walk across the parking lot. Though I was not a fan of Wade Kelley—the grouchy man hated country music, for Pete’s sake—I had to admit he looked awfully good walking away.

“Why’d you make up a story for the kid?”

I shrugged. “Just wanted to. He’s a cute kid who looked like he was about to cry. I wanted him to smile.”

“His daddy is more than cute. Good gracious alive.”

I watched Wade slide into the driver’s seat and say something to his son. He didn’t seem angry as he started the truck, braced his arm across the backseat and looked back as he reversed.

“You think so?”

“Hell, girl. Are you kidding me? That man is a full-on smoke-show.”

“I don’t see it.” Not entirely.

As Wade’s truck reversed, I could make out that deep frown of his through the window. His dark eyes caught mine for a split second. Or two. Then he turned around and drove out of the parking lot.

“Fine by me,” added Kayla, heading toward the breakroom. “You let me tend to his every need next time he comes in.”

Frowning, I headed back to the boxes of Peppermint Patty and the display I needed to finish, wondering why Kayla was annoying me so much today

Review: Letter Late Than Never by Lauren Connolly

Letter Late Than Never Letter Late Than Never by Lauren Connolly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided both a print and audio arc of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

As with all of the Smartypants Romance novels this reads as a standalone.  The other books in the Green Valley Heroes series are amazing and you should read them, but you can read them in any order you like.

This follows Gwen, the local mail person after a run in with her high school crush, local EMT Sebastian.  They both liked each other back then but it never went anywhere.  Now after reuniting, they can't deny that there is still something between them.  There's only one problem, Sebastian has been engaged to his long time sweetheart so he's off the market, or is he?  Both of them are ready to take next steps in their lives, but they both have things that are holding them back.  With some fun adventures and baby steps they are able to find their adventurous spirit and courage to face what comes next.

This was super fun, and I loved getting to know Gwen and Sebastian, they were really fun characters.  I don't want to spoil anything but the dynamics between Sebastian, his fiancĂ©, and Gwen was kind of strange and not my favorite trope.  I think it was executed well, and it was important to the character arcs, but not my favorite type of storyline.  It didn't quite seem believable in the small town where everyone knows everyone's business, the author kind of did address that which added to the humor of it all.  This had good character development and banter, and was pretty steamy.

I really enjoyed this.  The narrators did a great job brining Gwen and Sebastian to life.  They really brought the emotion and humor off of the page.  I'll never be able to look at glitter the same again.

Parks and Provocation, an all new enemies-to-lovers small town romance from Juliette Cross, is available now in Kindle Unlimited!

Excerpt

“Fancy meeting you here,” he said when I finally reached him.

“Fancy that,” I sassed back.

I tried monumentally hard to force my eyes to behave, but they were currently mapping the extensive breadth of his chest without my permission. As a matter of fact, they’d found their newest obsession, tracking the descent of a drop of water that looped around his navel and froze midway down his happy trail.

“What brings you here, Cola?”

I jerked my gaze back to his mischievous grin, contemplating ways to torture my best friend.

I was also debating whether leaning forward and licking him would be inappropriate. “Um, learning fire safety?”

His bark of laughter and dimpled smile detonated somewhere inside my chest and melted my insides into warm goo. Which, of course, drew my attention to his beautiful mouth and the fact that he intended to kiss me with that mouth on our next date.

“Let me guess,” he finally said, amusement still prevalent in every word. “Marly?”

“So, I’ve been wondering if stretching her on a rack would be forgiven by local law enforcement. Do you think they’d give me a free pass, considering,” I waved my hand at him and the surrounding scene behind him, “all this?”

“By this, you mean dragging you to watch a dozen firemen strut around without their shirts on?”

“So y’all do know that half of Green Valley’s womenfolk are gawking at you from across the street, right? Only half of which are actual moms of the scouts? If that.”

He nodded and exhaled a sigh, but that wicked smile remained in place. “Chief McClure said it’s a local tradition, and the fine ladies of Green Valley also donate generously to our annual fundraiser, so we just do as we’re told.”

“Basically, this is a Magic Mike show, minus the actual lap dances, where you get your tips at a later time.”

He edged closer, my eyes betraying me once again to dip down along his beautiful body, realizing that delectable drop of water had slipped down into the holy land.

“I’ll give you a lap dance for free if you like, Lola.”

“Do you walk around with bacon in your pocket or something?” Sierra asked.

Forrest gave Everest a final rub and rose to his feet. “I reckon it’s just good, old-fashioned Southern charm.”

Reaching toward his face, he pushed up the temple of his sunglasses until they sat on top of his head. Forrest looked down at her, smirk on his face, as usual, having his fun. Only, for Sierra, there was nothing fun about the heat that rose to her ears every time his gaze set on her, clouding her thinking with his smoky eyes.

Forrest’s eyes weren’t just gray, and they weren’t “just eyes.” His gaze was penetrating and clear, with dark lashes that matched his dark hair. His irises were never the same, though whatever their hue at any given moment, a dark charcoal ring that looked like drawn pencil outlined the lighter color, adding intensity. Today they shone brightly—the color of wet shale—a stark difference from the last time she’d seen him. They’d turned dark, like slate, when he’d talked about the fires. There was something wondrous, and magical, and devastating about watching the way they changed.

“What are you doing in my neck of the woods?”

Forrest chuckled and crossed his arms. “Your woods again, huh?”

Sierra mirrored his posture. “‘Neck of the woods’ is a Southernism. I know how y’all like your sayings.”

He laughed again, his voice rich and deep—another thing about him she had the bad habit of replaying in her mind.

“Better than a pig likes slop.” Forrest’s eyes twinkled.

It made Sierra grateful for her own sunglasses—windows to her soul, and all. She didn’t want to think what Forrest might notice if he really saw her then. He would never stop gloating if he knew of her susceptibility to his allure.

“You never said what you were doing here,” she pointed out.

“Following up on some potential fire hazards. Just being vigilant. You know how it is …”

Sierra nodded. “I do.”

“I was just down at the ranger station …” he began haltingly. “I wanted to thank you for what you left me—you know, my fire marshal snacks.”

Sierra bit her lip against her own smile. “You liked that, huh?”

“Not just me. The guys thought it was pretty funny.”

“You told me you could read, so I figured …” She trailed off innocently, and shrugged.

After their last conversation and his repeated, willful ignorance of her Tupperware marked specifically as being “Ranger Snacks,” she’d brought in a smaller Tupperware labeled “Fire Marshal Snacks.”

“Sad thing is, a different fire marshal must’ve beat me to it,” he continued. “Imagine my disappointment when I opened the container and it was empty.”

“Oh, no!” She feigned shock. “What did you do?”

“Picked up the phone and called Ed Ellis. Asked him to put out an APB to track down whoever had my bites.”

“Then you helped yourself to the ranger bites, I’m guessing.”

He made a production out of looking distraught. “They’re not as good as fire marshal bites, but I had no choice.”

He didn’t take his gaze off of her. When heat rose again in her ears, she knew she had to go. Plus, if she didn’t get moving, she really would be late.

“Nice to see you, Marshal Winters.”

His smirk melted into a half-smile. “Always a pleasure, Ranger Betts.”

Review: Forrest for the Trees by Kilby Blades

Forrest for the Trees Forrest for the Trees by Kilby Blades
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARV via Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

Do you like enemies to lovers with a little bit of a mystery involved? If you do this book is for you! This follows National Park Ranger Sierra Betts through the Smokey Mountains as she patrols her territory and banters with Federal Fire Marshal Forrest Winters. Forrest is always doing something to annoy Sierra, eating the bacon bites she makes for the other Rangers at her post, cracking jokes, and generally just being around where she doesn't want him. Side note, can we get the recipe for those bites?

As strange fires keep popping up in Sierra's territory, Forrest is led to believe that they have an arson case on their hands. When red tape and sketchy park politics come into play, Forrest and Sierra decide to work together to find out what is really going on in the park they love so much. As they get to know each other, Sierra realizes that Forrest isn't so bad after all and they start to develop real feelings for each other. As they begin to close in on the real fire starters, Sierra has to reveal to Forrest a secret that she's been keeping and hope that he won't feel betrayed.

This was great! This touches on several different social issues. I felt the social issues were well woven into the storyline and the message came across without taking away from the plot. There was a good balance of romance, character interaction, chemistry, and the investigation itself. Sometimes I find that when you throw all of those things together one of those things overtakes the story, but I felt like every element was given just the right amount of spotlight to shine. I thought both Sierra and Forrest were well developed and the world building was well done. I felt like the scenery and situations were well described.

If you like slow burn romance with an enemies to lovers vibe and a little bit of a suspense element to it, give this a go. Like all of the books in the Pennyverse/Smartypants Universe this is a standalone and features characters from other books written by Penny Reid or the other authors that have written books in or around Green Valley.

Kilby was honored with an RSJ Emma Award for Best Debut Author in 2018, and has been lauded by critics for "easing feminism and equality into her novels" (IndieReader) and "writing characters who complement each other like a fine wine does a good meal" (Publisher's Weekly).

During her career as a digital marketing executive, she moonlighted as a journalist, freelanced as a food, wine and travel writer and lived it up as an entertainment columnist. She has lived in five countries, visited more than twenty-five, and spends part of her year in her happy place in the Andes Mountains. Kilby is a feminist, an oenophile, a cinephile, a social-justice fighter, and above all else, a glutton for a good story. Follow her everywhere @kilbyblades.
