BLOG TOUR: SMART MOUTH by Emma Lee Jayne & Smartypants Romance

Smart Mouth, an all-new opposites attract romantic comedy from Emma Lee Jayne, is now available in Kindle Unlimited!

The rockstar

There are lots of assumptions people make about rockstars. Shallow. Player. Addict. The truth? I’m none of those.

The even bigger truth…the only opinion I care about is her’s and she hates me. Her as in Gwen Matthews, my twin brother’s best friend, the unrequited love of my life. She thinks I’m a liar and a jerk which is why I pretend to be my brother when she needs help one night.

Except Gwen is a genius. Literally. So it doesn’t take her long to figure out it’s me and not my brother, but maybe, just maybe, she’s willing to give me a second chance. Because maybe when she looks at me, she only sees a rockstar with her best friend’s face, but when I look at her, I see my other half. She centers me in a way that no rhythm or line of lyric ever could.

The scientist

I have three priorities in life at the moment: finish my research, defend my dissertation, and get my Ph.D., so that I can actually figure out what I’m supposed to do with my life. Tom Mendoza won’t help me achieve any of those things. Yet I can’t help the sudden feeling that I’ve been completely wrong about him all this time.

The day we first met when we were both teenagers, I saw a glimpse of a sweet, funny boy that felt very much like a kindred spirit; awkward and full of energy and dreams. But that guy seemed to disappear and in his place was this stereotypical stupidly hot rock star that did not make sense in my world.

Being a scientist means being willing to admit when you’re wrong and reevaluating everything. I might not understand much about human behavior, but I can clearly see the tender underbelly that Tom protects. The subtle rituals he uses to stave off his anxiety. Yes, he’s ridiculously hot, but his soul just might be more beautiful than his face and I’m not sure what to do with that.

Especially when I find out that he’s in love with me.

'Smart Mouth' is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #4 in the Work For It series, Educated Romance World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt

I’ve done a lot of stupid things in my life, but kissing Gwen is the best stupid thing I’ve ever done.

I know it’s a mistake. I know James will probably kill me if he ever finds out—and he will find out.

Hell, Gwen will kill me herself, if she ever finds out. Plus, she’s smart enough to get away with it—and to make it painful.

Despite all of that, I can’t sit here and let her think that I don’t want her. I can’t let her believe she’s repulsive or any other ridiculous idea. I can’t fucking watch her cry over it.

I’ve never really understood James and Gwen’s relationship. I’ve never understood how he’s been friends with this gorgeous, smart, awkward, frustrating woman without hitting on her. I don’t know how he made it through high school and college without kissing her, because, fuck it, I couldn’t make it through a thirty-minute car ride without wanting to kiss her.

I sure as fuck am not going to let her climb out of this car thinking she repulses men.

I don’t have a plan when I lean across the console and pull her to me. At least not beyond ridding her of this notion that I don’t want her.

But the second my mouth touches hers, I’m a goner.

Review: Smart Mouth by Emma Lee Jayne

Smart Mouth Smart Mouth by Emma Lee Jayne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via the author, all opinions are my own.

This is the 4th book in the Work for It series but it can be read completely as a standalone.  There are mention of characters from [book:Heart Smart|56400137], but each novel is standalone.

I really enjoyed this.  We have the Popstar and the Microbiologist, they are basically opposites in every way but you can't help you you are attracted to.  Gwen is best friends with James, or she was growing up.  Tom is James' twin brother, and he's been in love with Gwen since they met at 15.  Gwen only knows what James has told her about Tom, and most of it is stemmed in resentment because he got the part in the boy band and James did not.  Gwen is also a scientist, she spends her day working in a lab and going through scientific protocols.  When it comes to people she is clueless.  When she is reunited with Tom and he wants to spend time with her, she  has a hard time accepting that he likes her.  As she gets to know the real Tom and not the scripted boy-band version she thinks she knows, she realizes that there is so much more to him that meets the eye and she isn't sure what to do about that.

I really enjoyed Tom and Gwen.   They were both a bit of a mess when it comes to emotions and relationships.  There are alot of great discussion points in this book about living with ADHD, anxiety, dealing with change, etc.  I really loved that Tom had such a great support group, and Gwen had Max and Holly to set her on the right path about her feelings.  This had just the right mix of serious and comedy with a little spice mixed in.

BLOG TOUR: HEART SMART by Emma Lee Jayne

"Okay, people, you do not want to miss Heart Smart by Emma Lee Jayne! It’s fun and flirty and the chemistry crackles. Warning, though! It will keep you up past your bedtime!”  - New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner

Heart Smart, an all-new enemies to lovers contemporary romance from Emma Lee Jayne, is now available in Kindle Unlimited!

Dr. Maximillian Ramsey has a problem ….

I’m a jerk. Everyone I know or have ever worked with agrees. “Misanthropic asshole” is the term I hear most often.

I don’t care what other people think as long as they leave me alone to focus on my research on soil microbiology. Plus, I walk with a cane thanks to a childhood accident. I have scars on my face. And if that isn’t enough to scare people off, my bad attitude and general grumpiness seal the deal. Which is just the way I like it.

Except, I’ve been short listed for one of the most prestigious academic fellowships around. To win it, I’ll have to give a series of speeches. On a stage. With an audience. While being filmed.

Yeah. None of that is going to happen.

Unfortunately, my boss has a plan. He brings in one of the communications lecturers to give me a “make over,” help me write the speeches, and manage my social media.

But the last thing I need is some nosy, bossy, gorgeous woman meddling in my life.

And Holly is the solution…

I’m a mere communications lecturer at a prestigious research university. I’m used to being outclassed and under-educated compared to the PhDs who surround me.

But I’m good at what I do. Brilliant, actually.

When Max’s boss (who happens to be my ex-husband) begs me to help transform this beast of a man into someone worthy of the fellowship, I have my work cut out for me.

It’ll take a lot of badgering, blatant manipulation, and some outright thievery to get Max to cooperate. All of which I handle with the enough professionalism and restraint that should earn me a fancy grant.

What I can’t handle is how unexpectedly attractive I find the stubborn and brilliant man.

This is a battle of wills and wits, and neither is prepared to admit defeat …

Excerpt

He stands up and shrugs out of his wet duster. I take it from him. It’s still dripping, so I walk into the back to hang it up in the work area where it can drip on the linoleum instead of the wood floors. When I turn back, I see Max has also shucked his jacket and draped it over the back of a nearby chair.

And he’s unbuttoning his shirt.

My steps slow. Then stop.

He’s looking down, so he doesn’t see my mouth drop open as he shrugs out of his oxford shirt. He’s wearing a white T-shirt on under his oxford.

I never, not in a million years, would have thought wearing a white shirt under a dress shirt would be inherently sexy. It shouldn’t be.

It’s oddly formal. It calls up images of old-world elegance and cuff links.

But it’s also just . . . hot.

Because while all of Max’s other clothes are ill-fitting—including the pants he’s still wearing—the crisp white undershirt is snug. It highlights every one of those perfect muscles I’ve been trying not to think about since I saw them at his house that day.

Every. Single. One.

From his stupidly broad shoulders to that narrow waist.

I’m still staring—who am I kidding? I’m still drooling—when he looks up from carefully draping his shirt over this jacket.

I must look like a pervy cartoon with bugging eyes and a long, dangling tongue, because he clears his throat and says awkwardly, “I don’t like having hair caught in my collar.”

I nod mutely.

“So I took off my shirt.”

I nod again. Still dumbstruck.

But surely I’ll be able to speak again sometime in the next couple hours.

“I hope that’s okay.”

I clear my throat.

Because the whole struck-dumb-by-his-muscles thing is starting to get ridiculous.

“Yes.” I swallow. “Absolutely. Whatever you need.”

God, I hope that didn’t sound like a proposition.

I clear my throat again and quickly add, “To feel comfortable. You should do whatever you need to feel comfortable. That’s the point, right? You should be comfortable and I should be . . .”

Silent.

I should be silent.

Because, oh my God. Dumbstruck was so much better than this rambling mess.

“Firmer is better,” he blurts.

“Excuse me?”

He blushes and presses his lips together, before saying, “When you’re washing my hair. Or touching me. A firmer touch is better than a light one.”

I nod, the pieces falling into place. I had read that people with sensory issues and people on the spectrum sometimes find light touches over-stimulating.

“Thank you for telling me.” I want to say more. Something that will get him to open up to me. But is that really a good idea? Do I really need more ideas about how Max likes to be touched?

Um . . . that is a big, fat no. No, I do not. Because I’m only touching him to cut his hair and trim his beard. I do not need to be getting ideas beyond that.

Review: Heart Smart by Emma Lee Jayne

Heart Smart Heart Smart by Emma Lee Jayne
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was really cute. I liked the opposites attract aspect and I thought that Holly and Max really complemented each other. The author covers quite a few sensitive topics in this book divorce, miscarriage, adoption, mental health, animal rescue, social injustice, etc. It is alot to take in, but I thought all of it was handled well.

Holly works in Communications at the local university, and she has been tasked with helping gruff, awkward Max with his submission for a prestigious fellowship. Max likes to focus on his work, it is important to him and his research is important to the future of agriculture. He doesn't want to be judged for his appearance or social media presence. Unfortunately, times have changed and while he is very deserving of award and his work should speak for itself, he is going to have to play the game if he wants to win. Holly is an an expert at helping people present themselves on social media, professionally, and getting people to communicate effectively. Unfortunately is is often taken for granted and not taken seriously. Holly and Max are nothing alike, she is the chaos to his neatly ordered life, and they are both instantly attracted to each other. They annoy each other in comedic ways for a good part of the book, until they finally admit they are attracted to each other. I really loved watching Max come out of his shell as Holly calls him out on things that he doesn't understand or when he makes a mistake. The peanut butter and jelly moment was really sweet. I also loved the interactions between Max and Tavey, it really brings out a different side of Max that most people don't get to see. Tavey is hilarious and I'm hoping we get to see more of her in the future.

I would have liked to see Holly and Max work more on his interpersonal skill and lecture series. That part was kind of glossed over, she worked on a speech and cleaned up his appearance but they never actually worked on him playing nice with others. Her helping him out of his comfort zone and working with others was a crucial part of her job, but much of that happened off page. There is quite a bit of internal monologue from both characters, which I didn't mind in this case, it helps move the character development along as well as help you get to know them. That being said there was a bit too much self-depreciation in the book for my taste. Holly is often referring to her insecurity about not having a PhD, and Max is worried about being a huge person and scary. The reality is Holly is good at her job and very intelligent, and Max is not a Sasquatch. I did like that mental health was discussed and the difficulties associated with navigating life, work, and social situations. We need more of this in movies and books so that when you come across a guy like Max in real life, you realize he isn't a monster he's just a bit socially inept and hyper focused on his work.

Overall, I enjoyed this and look forward to reading more from this new to me author. This was was a really sweet story for a really unique couple.
