Review: Weight Expectations by M.E. Carter

Weight Expectations Weight Expectations by M.E. Carter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I adored this book! It covers so many topics that I related to in such a great way. Rian, pronounced "Ryan", is amazing. She is kind, considerate, smart, compassionate, excellent at her job, and she also likes eating great food and hates to exercise, I relate to both of those things. I related quite a few of the situations Rian encountered in this book. When her latest physical determines that she is overweight, she starts a new diet and exercise routine. Just one more added stress she doesn't need in her life right now. Her sister is getting married and driving her crazy, she is amazing at her job but isn't recognized, and while she is healthy she has to lose weight or her insurance is going to cost more. She joins a local gym where her trainer pushes her hard at the gym but their banter is hilarious, she also quickly befriends Tabitha, the woman who makes the healthy and tasty smoothies. Tabitha introduces her to Carlos, a beautiful man who is not interested in relationships and only seems to spend time with women who resemble Barbie dolls.

Carlos, once to get to know him, isn't actually a bad guy. He is just misguided on relationships. He is kind of superficial when we meet him. When Rian enters his life, she shakes things up for him. She is nothing like the women he spends a night or two with, never to speak to again. She is intelligent, funny, and he is drawn to her in a way he can't understand. Carlos finds himself thinking about her at work and watching her at the gym. He pushes thoughts of her aside because she doesn't fit what he thinks he wants. She does however fit the job opening he has at Cipher Security for an account manager. Rian is amazing at customer service but she's been passed over for no apparent reason at her current job time and again despite receiving several awards. I really liked how the author dealt with bias in the workplace with regard to Rian's job situation. Carlos and Rian find that their attraction to one another only intensifies as they spend more time working together and attending the same gym.

This is a funny, slow-burn, friends to lovers romance. I loved Rian so much, I want to go to the gym with her and complain about how much working out stinks but do it anyway. This has great side characters and good character development across the entire story.

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.  This is one of three Smartypants Romance releases due out on October 15, 2019.
