The King picks up where The Prince left off. Brighton is determined to avenge her mother's death by tracking down the evil Ancient fae who attacked them and murdered her mother and left Brighton for dead. Caden, The King, is set on keeping Brighton from hunting fae because despite the fact that he says they can't be together because of reasons, he doesn't want any harm to come to her. Brighton is no longer the meek, quiet researcher that everyone in the Order has come to know, driven by her need for vengeance she has trained on her own to be a fierce warrior.

As Brighton and Caden both hunt for Aric, the Ancient fae who has cause both of them unspeakable pain, they find it hard to deny the attraction they feel for one another. Caden knows he can't be with Brighton because his duties as king require much of him. Fueled by her anger at Caden, her feeling of inadequacy within the Order, Brighton is only more determined to find Aric and kill him. Unfortunately Aric has plan of his own for Brighton and Caden. Aric takes Brighton and holds her in captivity for several weeks, as you can imagine this is brutal and torturous. He plans to use her as leverage to get Caden to do something, and Aric reveals several juicy details about Caden's past that may influence the King's decisions.

Fans of Tink will not get their fix, as he doesn't play a big role in this installment. He, Ivy, and Ren are all in the story but their parts are small and the main focus of the book is really on Brighton and her strength. She endures so much pain and while I won't say she is OK, she survives only to be presented with more issues to deal with. Can you say cliffhanger. There is another novella coming and I can't wait to find out how it all ends for Brighton and Caden. I really love this world and how the characters have developed over time. Brighton has come so far from the original series and she is only getting better.

“I don’t think this is wise,” Tink said for what had to be the hundredth time since he realized I was getting ready for a night out. “Like I think this is very poorly thought-out, if you ask me, Lite Bright.”

“I didn’t ask you, Tink.”

My uninvited roommate of sorts hovered outside my bathroom. Tink wasn’t human, but right now, he looked like any normal twenty-something guy. Well, if normal, twenty-something guys had natural, shockingly white hair and were beautiful in a way that almost seemed fragile.

This was his full-grown Tink size, something I was still—even after all this time—getting used to. I was more accustomed to pint-sized Tink with the translucent wings. After all, he was a brownie.

After the attack that had taken my mother’s life and should’ve ended mine, he’d basically moved in with me. He’d been here for the last two years, something Ivy’s husband pretended to be grateful for, but in reality, I knew he secretly missed the dude.

“You should ask me,” he replied. When I glanced over at him, I got a little distracted by the dazzle…emanating from the sequin tank top he wore. It was so shimmery that I wondered if he was using some of his magic.

Tink may be a goofball, but he was also one of the most powerful creatures in our realm.

Thank God there was only one of him.

“I am a wealth of amazing advice,” he continued. Dixon, the cat he’d named after a Walking Dead character that Tink called “the hottest redneck eva” slinked around Tink’s ankles. The cat was all gray except for his tail, which looked like it had been dipped in white paint.

I snorted. “When have you ever given me good advice?”

“When I told you two weeks ago not to eat the whole carton of beignets because you’d get sick and you did,” he shot back.

I winced, picking up my mascara. I had gotten sick, but I deserved that carton of sugary, fried goodness. That day…

I didn’t want to think about that day.

“And what about when you ordered that supreme pizza and ate almost all of it?” he said. “I told you that it would probably make you feel bad later.”

Nose wrinkling, I tried to remember what night he was talking about. There were a lot of Friday nights—pizza night in my household—that I ate an entire pie and felt terrible afterward.

“Or how about that time I told you that the seared ahi tuna looked a little gray for my liking? But, oh no, Brighton knows better.” He reached down, scratching Dixon between the ears. “You ate it all, and then I spent the night cleaning up your puke.”

Review:

The Prince is a novella in the universe of the Wicked series.  It does not follow Ren and Ivy, however they as many of our other favorite characters from the original series are present.  This is meant to be an introduction to the world and can be read as a standalone or as a companion to the original series.  The story takes place after the Wicked Trilogy so fans of the series get more, and new readers get enough of the world and characters to know if they want to read the series from the beginning.  I really loved it. 

This follows Brighton, who is one of the side characters in the original series who we don't really get to know very well.  Brighton was always taking care of her mother, so she wasn't in the thick of things.  She belongs to a secret organization called The Order, they are tasked with taking out faeries who prey on unsuspecting humans.  We learned in the original series that there are good fae and bad fae.  The Summer Fae are the good guys, they don't feed or prey on humans, the Winter fae on the other hand are evil incarnate.  Merle, Brighton's mother was attacked by Winter Fae some time ago and it has left her mind in a fragile state.  Brighton has been taking care of her since she was 12, so her training to be a warrior was put on hold.  Merle has one of her episodes and is found walking around the streets one evening leaving her and Brighton unprepared for the fae attack that comes for them.  Tragedy strikes and leaves Brighton thirsty for revenge.  She spends her days working for The Order in the office and her nights trolling fae clubs in various costumes looking for the fae who attacked her.  Unbeknownst to Brighton someone else is looking for those fae as well.

Here we meet The Prince or Caden as we later come to know him.  He was held captive by the Winter fae and made to do horrible things.  He is trying to redeem himself and protect the fae of his court as well as their human allies.  The Prince is a gorgeous, broody sort who keeps to himself.  No one is able to get close to him except his brother, the other faerie Prince.  He runs into Brighton as she is on one of her undercover missions to track down her attackers, but he doesn't out her as an Order member.  He sees her a few days later when she is asked to let The Order know that some of the fae younglings have turned up missing.  There is a delicate balance with the Summer Court and The Order, and Brighton is trying to keep the peace.  She and The Prince have and instant chemistry, yet they both hold back.  As the mystery unfolds surrounding the attackers and the missing young ones, the two of them continue to grow closer.

I was completely taken by surprise that this didn't exactly continue the original story.  I really liked the character pairing, especially because it was unexpected.  I liked that it wasn't a direct continuation but it does take place after the original and we get enough information to feed the story along.  This kind of leaves off on a cliffhanger, and I desperately hope there is more!  I loved the development of Caden and Brighton's relationship, they never quite develop a full on romance.  I do wish we'd have gotten a little more information on the whole Aric plotline, but this particular story is a bit more character driven.  Rumor has it that there will be another installment and I hope that answers our questions about Aric, the Queen, and the King. 

Overall, this is a great addition to the Wicked Series.  I think there is enough backstory to be read as a standalone and read this installment without having read the other three books.  I'd only recommend them because they are also good, and I recommend the series as well.  If you are a fan of the original series I highly recommend this.

Excerpt:

I opened my eyes, but I didn’t see the sun. I saw a form… a shape of a man. The features blurred, but I knew the man. It was him.

The Prince….

But that also didn’t make sense. None of this made sense. Confusion crept into the fuzz crowding my thoughts. Something was off. I tried to lift my hand, but my arm felt like it was weighted down. Something was wrong, very badly wrong, and I needed to remember—

Sleep.

The desire to slip away hit me hard and fast, obliterating the confusion and consciousness, and I slept. I slept for what felt like years and then I heard a steady beeping. It intruded on wherever I was, becoming so loud, so obnoxious to me, that I had to pay attention to it. A part of my consciousness zeroed in on the sound, clung to it, and I followed it back, tethering myself to the rhythm. With each passing second, my surroundings became clearer. Footsteps. I heard footsteps. Whispers. There was the sound of hushed voices. I dragged in a deep breath, and a shock hit my system. The breath hurt. Like my chest and ribs were too tight and a simple deep breath was too much to take—

Mom.

I saw her in my mind, as clear as day.

I saw her lying on her back in the darkness, her eyes wide and fixed on mine. There was nothing behind those eyes. No life. Nothing.

The beeping sound sped up.

The horrifying image of my mom faded like smoke, replaced by luminous skin and bloody smiles and taunts and…

Pools of blood. Actual pools of it. The ruby-red liquid spilled across stone, forming rivulets that ran between the spacing in the pavers. Why had there been so much blood? A vague feeling of wet warmth bubbling up my throat and choking me swept through me.

“Bri? Are you awake? Brighton?”

EXCERPT:

Did it make you a bad friend if you were completely, a hundred percent envious of that friend? Yes? No? Kind of?

I figured it was somewhere in between.

That’s what I was mulling over as I watched Ivy Morgan brush thick, red curls over her shoulder, laughing at something her boyfriend Ren Owens had said to her.

At least I wasn’t envious of that—their love. Okay, well, that wasn’t entirely true. Pretty sure anyone who was as single as me would be envious of all that warm and fuzzy that was passed back and forth with each long look or casual brush of skin. The two could barely tear their gazes away from one another to eat the dinner we’d grabbed at the cute little diner inside the shopping center on Prytania Street.

I honest to God couldn’t be happier for them. They’d been through so much—way more than two people should ever have to go through to be together, and here they were, stronger and more in love than ever, and they deserved that happiness.

But their epic love story wasn’t the source of a current case of the green-eye monster that was sitting on my shoulder.

Ivy was just such a… badass.

Even right now, relaxed in the chair, surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights with her hand in Ren’s and her belly full of a cheeseburger deluxe and crinkle fries and half of my tater tots, she could kick ass and take names along with addresses, telephone numbers, and social security numbers.

If the proverbial poo hit the fan, you called Ivy or Ren.

If you needed to know what streets Royal intersected with, you called… me. Or if you needed coffee or fresh beignets but were currently busy, you know, saving the world, you’d call me.

The three of us were all members of the Order, a widespread organization that was literally the only thing that stood between mankind and complete, utter enslavement and destruction by the fae. And not the super cute fae found in Disney movies or some crap like that. Humans thought they were on top of the food chain. They were wrong. The fae were.

The only thing pop culture got right about the fae was their slightly pointy ears. That was it. The fae were more than just beings from another world—the Otherworld—they were capable of glamouring their appearance to blend in with humans. But all Order members, even me, were warded at birth against the glamour. We saw through the human façade to the creature that lurked beneath.

This was a great wrap up to the Wicked Trilogy, but it doesn't really end the story. That kind of bugs me, but I understand that there is a novella coming out that is a continuation to the story that hopefully will tie up the remaining loose ends. While the storyline does have an ending (which I'm happy with), its kind of an ending for now with the promise of more to come...later. It just kind of felt incomplete to me, and that bugs me a little. Other than that this was a great story, and I really enjoyed the series overall. Ivy grows alot, she has to deal with the trauma she faced in book 2 at the hands of Prince Drake. She has to deal with some heavy stuff, but she being stubborn and kind of embarrassed by what she's had to do and tries to deal with it all on her own. She shuts out Tink and Ren, and makes some pretty bad decisions. This as you can imagine hurts everyone and causes a pretty epic fight between her and Ren, which leads to an even more epic make up. There is alot more steam between Ren and Ivy in book 3, not that there wasn't in the previous books it is just more frequent. I think part of that is they are finally together and committed to each other, plus they've been through some stuff.

There are some great plot twists in Brave. Some I never saw coming. We also learn what Tink has been doing with all of those Troll dolls. Tink as always is hilarious, and much more present in this book. There is alot of action as Ivy and the gang track down the prince and try to prevent the apocalypse.

Torn picks up where Wicked leaves off. Ivy has just discovered a very big secret about herself. She struggles with what she learns for the entire book and how that will shape her moving forward. Her secret hasn't changed who she is, but it has to the potential to change how Ren feels about her, and possibly puts everyone she knows in danger.

We learn that not all of the fae may be evil, and that sends Ivy on a mission to find more about fae that might be able to help her defeat the prince and his evil entourage. Prince Drake shows us how ancients end up tricking humans into willingly sleeping with fae with his creepy trickery. He continues his evil ways by kidnapping Ren and luring Ivy to him. Ivy makes a deal to save Ren and promises to give into Drake and have the "apocalypse baby". We see Drake try to break Ivy, and Ivy almost give into the weakness she sees inside herself. Torn is the perfect title for this book as that is exactly what Ivy is through most of the book. She was a bit naïve in Wicked, but she finds herself torn between what she thought she knew, who she thought she was, and who she needs to become based on what she learns and what she goes through. It is this weakness that will make her stronger, and I look forward to seeing her put the pieces of herself back together in book 3.

I loved that we got more Tink, and I hope we get more Tink in Brave. I really enjoyed getting to know more about Brownies and fae in general. We get more of his hilarious antics and banter. I also love his loyalty to Ivy. I’m looking forward to hearing more about the “good” faeries and see where the kind of revolution that Ivy and company find themselves a part of at the end of Torn is headed.
