My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was provided an ARC of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review. This will be out February 16, 2020.
The action really picked up in this installment. The plot threads are slowly starting to come together. There is still quite a bit of unknown information, but we finally get some of the action that the previous installments have been leading up to. We are getting closer to understanding who is behind the Imortik attacks and who their master is. We are also getting closer to understanding who all of the players are and what their motivations are. I beginning to suspect that all is not as it seems and we are going to see some pretty good twists coming up in the next few installments. It is getting harder and harder to review these novellas without spoiling things.
This isn't told from multiple perspectives but it doesn't switch focus every few chapters to one of the main players. I find it interesting that it doesn't just focus on the two main characters but also includes some of the other main characters including some that are villains and some that haven't revealed their allegiance quite yet. Normally I don't like so much swapping around, but this actually gives us some good insight as to what is going on with each character and the plot as a whole. The plot is still pretty convoluted as there are so many characters to keep track of and there are still so many things that need to be untangled before the end. Casidhe is still trying to get her head around her feelings for Daegan and all of the lies and untruths she has been told. Daegan has the weight of the world on his shoulders and the clock is still ticking for him to find the 3 grimoires to defeat the Imortiks and save the infected Beladors and stop a war that is brewing and out of Viper. And we have all of the supporting characters doing their best to support Daegan and the Beladors as they battle demons and infected supernaturals as well as angry humans. Things are pretty much a hot mess for the Beladors right now and you can be sure that Cathbad and Queen Maeve are right there to keep making everything worse for them.
As always the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger and this one was a bit of a twisty one. There are some new players introduced in this installment and I have a feeling that they will play a large role in the final outcome of the story as a whole. I'm really excited to get the next one next month and continue on this adventure
