Charm (A Cinderella reverse fairytale) by J.A. Armitage
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received an ARC of this book from the author via instafreebie in exchange for an honest review. This is out tomorrow, I recommend grabbing a copy if you like fairy tale retellings.
I really enjoyed this Cinderella retelling, but in reverse. It is like Cinderella meets the Selection, and I really liked the original fairy tale elements that the author wove into the story but with a new twist. Main character Charmaine must find a husband, much like the prince from the original fairy tale we all know. Charmaine isn't interested in getting married, becoming queen, or palace politics like her other sisters. Charmaine wants to read and explore and be comfortable. Tragedy has befallen her family and leaving Charmaine next in line, and duty calls for her to find a husband at the ball and hold a wedding that her parents have already started planning. Never really one to play by the rules, Charmaine finds herself in the kitchens after hours with a kitchen hand named Cynder. Cynder is a mage, who can use magic with the aid of a wand, but magic is highly regulated and pretty much illegal in the kingdom of Silverwood. Cynder and Charmaine become fast friends during their nightly cooking and dishwashing sessions. As the 100 suitors chosen by her parents begin to arrive, Charmaine finds herself wishing she could spend more time with Cynder than anyone else. After narrowing the men down from 100 to 5, Charmaine must decide who stays and who goes. As she gets to know the gentlemen, she also learns the reason the Magi are so restricted in society and why her mother and father have kept that information from her. When more and more strange things start to happen and the palace wrongfully blame the Magi for the violent acts, Charmaine realizes that she can use her royal position and the man she marries to make changes in the world. Things don't exactly go according to plan, and Charmaine finds herself not only fighting for love, but for her people.
I loved this. If you like fairy tales, Cinderella, or the Selection this is the book for you. Cinderella is one of my favorite tales and I loved the Selection. This unique retelling is well written, and kept me on my toes until the end. I can't wait until book 2 to see where things go next. It comes out in December and I'll be patiently waiting. This is the first book I've read by J.A. Armitage, but you can bet I'll be checking out more of her stuff.

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why perpetually level-headed Jessica James has been in naĂ¯ve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can't stand him, and she's pretty sure he can't stand the sight of her...
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane's disdain; therefore she's unprepared for the reality that is Duane's insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks.
When Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?
Truth or Beard is book #1 in the Winston Brother's series. Each book is a standalone, full length, contemporary romantic comedy/women's fiction novel, and follows the exploits and adventures of one of the six Winston Brothers.

PLAY ON by Samantha Young Review and Excerpt
Review
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Samantha Young's books, so I jumped on the chance to review her latest offering. I loved PLAY ON, I really felt for the two main characters, they both had some heartbreaking past experiences that they bonded over and that brought them together. I enjoyed that they took their time building up their relationship before things got physical. There were plenty of steamy moments, but there was lots of relationship development as well both with the main characters and the side characters.
PLAY ON follows Nora O'brien, who's had her hopes and dreams taken away by tragedy. Her father was once a loving and successful owner of a construction company in town. He ignored his diabetes too long and put all of his time into his business. Then it was too late to fix his medical problems, and he became home bound, forcing Nora and her mother to take care of him in his bitter state. Nora and her mother found themselves having to work around the clock to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Nora had to let go of her college dreams and any dreams she may have for the future.
Enter Jim and Roddy, two older boys from Scotland on a trek across the US. They happen to stop in Nora's town, and Jim and Nora hit it off right away. Sparks fly between the two and before she know's it Nora finds herself running away to Scotland to get married. Fast forward 3 years, Nora again finds herself dreaming of things she wants but blocked by lack of finances and a husband who wants to keep her all to himself. Once again ready to take charge of her life, Nora again finds her life rocked by an unexpected tragedy. In an attempt to rid herself of the guilt she feels for not loving Jim enough before his sudden death, Nora finds herself volunteering at a local hospital acting out children's books to the sick kids who are being treated there. Dressed as Peter Pan, she finds herself not only acting out her dreams but face to face with Aidan another dreamy Scot. Nora and Aidan have crossed paths before, but Nora was a married woman at the time, and Aidan was just a passing stranger. Aidan is the uncle to one of the kids in the reading group Nora meets with, and he is quickly as enamored with Nora as his niece is. Aidan and Nora have both had a tough go at life, and they find themselves quickly bonding over their painful pasts.
Things seem to be going well for the couple, when a tragic miscommunication occurs and they are broken apart when they need each other the most. Nora uses this heartbreaking moment in her life to finally go back to school and explore acting. She goes on a journey of self discovery and finds herself on her own, which is something she was never able to do as a teen or as a newlywed. Then the couple is reunited and all kinds of sparks fly.
I really loved this book. My heart ached for both characters and their back stories. I think Nora's story of self discovery is so easy to relate to. If you've lost a loved one, or taken care of a sick loved one, or even just had to put something you wanted to do on hold because of life getting in the way for some reason, you can relate to her story. I really love that she finally went back and sought out her dreams and she never gave up. I also really liked that I got a sense of closure from the characters. I wasn't left wondering "whatever happened with this plot line?" at the end of the book. The author did a great job shutting all of those outstanding story lines down and bringing a sense of peace to the characters, atleast for me.

Despite Seonaid’s warning that I couldn’t keep my feelings bottled up, I tried very hard to convince myself that I was okay with how things had played out with Aidan. That I needed to be okay so I could go on living my life in perfect contentment. While he gallivanted around the theater with his beautiful women and horse-assery.
Finding my Zen, however, was proving more difficult than I’d thought. I was a bundle of confused feelings. At war with myself.
So it wasn’t any wonder I reacted the exact opposite of how I’d hoped when Aidan finally confronted me in private.
Having to meet up with another student to work on an assignment we had for a tutorial, I hadn’t seen any point in heading home to Sighthill only to have to return to Tollcross for rehearsal. I’d grabbed a salad from a shop on Potterrow, and walked to the theater. I was ninety minutes early so no one was there. Thankfully, Quentin was usually at the theater during the day so the doors were open. When I got inside the auditorium, however, it was pitch black.
“Quentin?” I called out. “Are you here?”
My voice echoed.
Nothing.
“Anyone?”
But the silence told me I was alone. I wondered if Quentin had accidentally left the theater unlocked. I’d need to let him know.
Switching on the stage lights to make me not feel like I was about to become part of a horror movie, I found my way into an empty dressing room.
Eating my salad, I worked on a paper, waiting for the minutes to tick by.
A noise far off in the distance made me still like a rabbit caught in headlights. I cocked my head, listening, and sure enough, footsteps approached. Blood rushed in my ears as my pulse raced. I then cursed myself for being freaked out when it was obviously a cast member who was—I glanced at my watch—an hour early.
I waited, and the dressing room door I had left slightly ajar squeaked open.
My breath caught at the sight of Aidan filling the doorway.
He crossed his arms and his ankles and leaned against the jamb, staring at me dispassionately.
All I could do was stare back, my emotions whirling in a mess of feelings, like a tornado, with no thought to what it was sucking up into its wind funnel. “What are you doing here?” I finally said, my voice hoarse.
“I was sitting in the coffee shop across the way and I saw you come in.”
“You followed me?”
“I argued with myself about it for a while. But aye.”
Adrenaline coursed through me and made my hands shake. I curled them into fists and hoped I looked back at him with as much boredom as he was bestowing upon me. “Why?”
“Curiosity.” He shrugged.
“Curiosity?”
“Were you always such a heartless robot and I was just too fucking blind to see it?”
I flinched, knowing this was the moment I should tell him that Laine had lied to me. But I couldn’t get the words out. I wanted to and I didn’t want to.
So fear of him hating me and fear of him loving me left me in some kind of exasperated, frustrated no-man’s land. I shot to my feet. “If you came here to use me as your emotional punching bag, you can leave,” I hissed.
His eyes flashed and he pushed off the jamb, coming into the room. For the first time, I hated that I had to tip my head back to look up at him. “Not before I tell you what I really think of you, Nora, instead of hiding it behind the subterfuge of giving a fuck what happens with this play.”
“Aidan—”
“You are the biggest coward I’ve ever met in my life. You’re weak and emotionally defunct. What’s worse is how fucking manipulative you are—”
“Aidan—”
“I’ve never met anyone who had me so fucking fooled!” His chest heaved as his cool fled in the wake of his rage. “You lied and strung me along, fled when the going got tough, not once but goddamn twice, and I’m the idiot who let you do that to me.”
“Aidan—”
“But rest assured, Nora, you are the last woman who is ever going to make a fool out of me. I see you now. Who you really are. A fucked-up, selfish, self-involved, immature little—”
Whatever horrible thing he was going to call me next, I swallowed it in my kiss. Unable to bear his contempt any longer, but not knowing how to make it stop, I went with my gut.
And my gut told him to grab his T-shirt in my fists and use it to haul him down to my mouth.
What a mistake.
Because I remembered him now.
I remembered how beautiful he felt.
So when his hands gripped my forearms and tried to pry me off, I let him, only to slide my arms around his neck and cling on tighter, kissing him in desperation.
He grunted and grabbed my arms again and just as I feared he would shove me away, he broke. Aidan jerked me closer, his mouth opening under mine, his tongue searching for my tongue.
Quite abruptly, he was in charge.

Review: Intensity by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Intensity by Sherrilyn Kenyon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much to Nemesis Publications for providing me a copy, I truly loved this. Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of my favorite authors, so ths was truly an honor to review. Nick is one of my favorite characters from this universe, and I love this YA spinoff series. Simi might actually be my favorite.
I think it was a great ending to the high school Nick saga, and I like where this is heading. We always knew Nick was going to end up as an adult in the Dark-Hunter universe, but I was never quite sure how that was going to tie back into the regular adult series given that the Chronicles of Nick is a fairly clean YA series. Sherri has always kept the adult stuff in her adult books, an has kept Nick to be a good kid with a fairly good head on his shoulders, atleast in the hormone department. I'll be honest I was frustrated with the last book for not moving the plot along much and really confusing me, however I think this one did a nice job moving the story line along and ending it in a decent place. We got some good explanations on what is actually happening with Nick's timeline in this book, and where it is headed. There are still some vague plot points, but they appear to be vague with a purpose. I'm starting to see how the Nick/Cyprian/Ambrose timeline stuff might actually tie back to the underlying plot of the Dark Hunter story line one day.
This story follows Nick and the gang through another zany adventure in the time continuum. Nick is still trying to fix the timeline that Ambrose broke, or did he? We find out that Cyprian, Nick's future son is manipulating Nick's timeline. We still don't know how Cyprian came to be, it is inferred that Nick learned how Cyprian was created and I think we will learn more about that in a future installment. We learned a bit more about Nick's family tree, and it cemented that Kody and Cherise are his two anchors from going full Malachi and destroying the world. Cyprian on the other hand is determined to destroy Nick, but like Nick, there may be hope for him yet. If you know anything about the Dark Hunter world, love always wins. I'm excited to see what the future holds for our lovable gang of demons.
This series has a ton of characters and places and words that are specific to the Dark Hunter and Chronicles of Nick universe. You almost need a Cliff Notes guide to keep you from getting confused, especially since the books come out so far apart. I feel like now that this part of the series is over, I need to go back and reread all 8 books and take notes so I'm prepared for the next stage of Nick's story.
I'll be purchasing a hardback to complete my collection. I believe they are available now on Amazon, BN.com, and through Sherri's website store now.

Review: The Young Elites by Marie Lu
The Young Elites by Marie Lu
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I loved this. It took me a little while to get into the audio with the multiple narrators, but overall it was excellent. It is mainly narrated from the perspective of main character Adelina Amouteru, a young girl who has survived a deadly illness, but has come out marked by the fever. Those marked are called malfetto and seen as bad luck by society. Some malfetto's though have developed supernatural powers as a result of the fever, Adelina to her knowledge does not possess any such powers, much to her father's dismay. Adelina's dark powers manefest when she is in grave danger and very scared, as fear feeds her. Adelina is saved by the rebel group The Young Elites, a group of malfettos with powers set on overthrowing the monarchy and providing a safe place for malfettos and other Young Elites to live without fear of persecution. Enzo, leader of The Young Elites, and the crown prince, quickly befriends Adelina, though his peers are cautious of her and her dark powers. The Elites agree to train Adelina, and she quickly is taken in by courtesan Rafaele. Rafaele is friend to the prince and wants to help Adelina hone her powers, as he feels they could also destroy her if she cannot contain them.
Out to destroy all malfetto's is Teren Santoro, a member of the king's elite guard. Teren and Rafaele are our other two narrators, and they provide an important perspective to the story. Teren needs Adelina to provide information to get to the Elites, so he kidnaps her sister. Adelina not knowing who to trust and how to keep her sister safe, she eventually gets tired of being used by everyone she's ever known, her father, Enzo, and Teren to mention a few she finally decides to take matters into her own hands. After some interesting plot twists, Adelina escapes Teren's clutches, however she decides to strike out on her own to find more malfettos like herself that have been discarded to fight Teren and the crown as she is no longer a welcome member of The Young Elites.
I am patiently waiting for my turn for the next book on audio at the library. I'm trying to get better at reviewing audiobooks. I've really loved most of the ones I've listened to this year, but it is really hard for me to write reviews of them when I don't have the book or ebook right in front of me. It is hard to pull up passages, and get names and facts correct if you don't have the book.

Review: Nyxia by Scott Reintgen
Nyxia by Scott Reintgen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this. It was action packed for sure, and it has some serious plot twists. It had alot of themes of other YA dystopian novels I've read in the past, but it was also distinctly different. It gave me Hunger Games in space vibes, but without all the killing. I mean that as a sincere compliment to the author. I loved Hunger Games as well. I also don't think this was specifically dystopian, I don't think it was ever said that there had been an apocalypse or anything of that nature it was just in the future. Nyxia is a mysterious but valuable substance that has been found on another planet. Nyxia can be manipulated, but it is also sentient and kind of has a mind of its own. Those aboard the spacecraft Genesis 11 must learn to manipulate Nyxia as well as mine it from the planet Eden. While on the journey through space to Eden, the 10 teens onboard Genesis 11 are vying for 8 spots to actually go to Eden and meet the native Adamites. The story is told from the perspective of Emmett, a poor teen who's mother is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. In swoops the Babel Corporation with their mission to Eden with endless funds and miracle medicine. If Emmett competes and wins a spot to Eden he and his parents are set for life, and while he competes his mother gets all the medical care she needs. Sounds pretty good right? You quickly guess that Babel is not the righteous company and that they've got something up their sleeves. It turns out Babel has angered the natives on Eden, so they are using teenagers to mine Nyxia from the planet. Adamites revere children, so Babel is using them as they feel the Adamites won't hurt them. Eden is a wild place and the kids don't exactly know what they are getting themselves into as Babel doesn't always give them the whole story. Each of the kids on board Genesis 11 has something they are fighting for, and going to Eden would mean each of them and their families would be set for life. Losing isn't really an option for any of them. Determined to win one of the 8 spots, Emmett sees each of his shipmates as enemies, but along the way he builds some friendships he never saw coming. In the same vein, he makes some enemies that won't let up.
As the journey comes to a halt and the scoreboard is tight for the last spot, Babel throws everyone a plot twist. There is another ship full of 10 more contestants, and there are only 15 spots total heading to Eden. The crew of Genesis 12 is lead by Morning, and they prove to be quite the adversaries. Genesis 11 never learned to work as a team, while Morning has the crew of Genesis 12 working like a well oiled machine. Emmett desperately tries to gain every point he can to earn his spot to Eden. At every turn he has to fight to keep his score up and a knife out of his back.
I hesitate to say more to keep spoilers out of the review. I can't wait to see where the next book goes. I really loved this first one and think it was a great lead off to the series.

Review: The Shack by William P. Young
The Shack by William Paul Young
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I didn't know a lot going into this book, but I needed a best-seller for a genre I don't normally read for my reading challenge. I typically don't read religion based books. This one kept coming up for a couple different prompts, and I saw it at a used book sale so I grabbed it. I figured I was only out $1, and I could use it for several of the challenge prompts. It isn't very long either, and it was a pretty easy read. I can see myself reaching for this in dark times.
This got a ton of mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. It had a lot of great take-aways and points of inspiration. I can see why people struggling with something or who need help dealing with crisis or tragedy find comfort in this book. There were some great points about love, friendship, forgiveness, and relationships. I really liked the non-traditional portrayal of the holy trinity and the acceptance of all religions. I kind of liked the parts where God in the book basically told Mack that everyone was welcome and loved no matter what religion you practice or who you are and past transgressions. The God in The Shack was very loving and forgiving. I can also see why people don't like the book, it paints a fairly non-traditional picture of God and religion. So if you are fairly formal in your practice and study of your religion of choice you may find this book blasphemous. I didn't expect this book was going to change my beliefs, nor did I think it was telling anyone how or what to believe. My favorite part of the book It is fiction after all, so take it with a grain of salt. I think it had some thought provoking ideas, but I would definitely rely on my religious officials for any real guidance.
The Shack is a man's fantastic tale that takes place over the course of a weekend. Mackenzie Allen Philips, or Mack for short, has suffered a great tragedy and his entire family feels the loss of his youngest daughter. Never getting closure on the event, Mack is still suffering depression when he receives a note from God to meet in the shack where they found the piece of evidence indicating that his daughter was murdered. Mack heads to the shack and embarks on a journey of faith and forgiveness. Mack wrestles with so many questions presented to him over such a short time that most people wrestle with at some point in their lives. To say more would spoil the plot.
I think people who are struggling and are maybe needing a little light in their lives might find The Shack a useful read. I think if you already have a strong traditional religious presence in your life, this might not be for you. Review: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a very interesting tale of alternate realities existing at the same time with infinite possibilities available. The book follows Jason Dessen as he travels through these realities as he desperately tries to reunite with his wife and son. Jason goes out one evening to celebrate the success of an old friend, only to find himself being kidnapped, by himself and sent to another version of his hometown of Chicago. Jason 2, made all the choices Jason didn't and became a successful astrophysicist, and Daniela, his wife became a famous artist and she did not have a child with Jason in alternate Chicago. Jason 2 after all of his success in discovering "dark matter" and successfully being able to travel through alternate dimensions, has decided to oust Jason because he has the family that Jason 2 gave up. Daniela and Charlie notice differences with Jason 2 around, but they can't put their finger on it. In alternate Chicago, Jason struggles to figure out what is going on. At first he thinks he's losing his mind, then he plays along as if he has amnesia, then he learns what Jason 2 has built and why he took over his life. Desperate to get back to Daniela and Charlie, Jason escapes into the box that Jason 2 built and must learn to navigate the alternate realities in order to get back to his family. Jason encounters many hardships, several hellish worlds, and a few versions of himself on his journey to get back to those he loves. To say more would spoil the thrills and twists that happen throughout the book.
I enjoyed the audio version. The entire time I was listening to it, I was reminded of the TV series Fringe. I loved that show and it had an element of alternate reality travel to it, plus I really loved the main character Walter. I miss that show. I kept seeing Jason as Walter even though he wasn't that old. There was a lot of scientific information presented in the book which I enjoyed. The twists and turns kept me engaged, and while alternate realities isn't really a new concept, Crouch did a great job with his presentation.
This book takes care of advanced reading prompt to read a best seller from 2016. I had been wanting to read Dark Matter since it came out, I had heard nothing but great things about it.
