Review: Prose Before Bros by Cathy Yardley

Prose Before Bros Prose Before Bros by Cathy Yardley
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It follows Thuy, a Vietnamese librarian who has some baggage from her childhood. She was able to get past her unconventional upbringing and get out of the life her family chose to lead and make the life she wanted. She didn't do it all alone though, her best friend Maddy from Green Valley helped her out through some tough times. Now back in Green Valley after Maddy's father has passed, Thuy is determined to support Maddy in her time of need. When Drill, Maddy's older, estranged brother and member of the local motorcycle gang, comes back into the picture after leaving her life sparks fly between him and Thuy. He also gets into a huge argument about how to handle the family farm with Maddy. There are several different tense situations between Thuy and Drill as their attraction increases, Drill and Maddy as they butt heads about the farm, and Drill and his gang as he battles with right and wrong and what is good for him and what is good for the gang. Overall I enjoyed the different plots going on in the book. It kept it interesting and the pacing was good.

I loved Thuy and Maddy's friendship. They genuinely loved and supported one another. Everyone should have a Maddy or Thuy in their lives. Someone willing to drop everything and help out. Maybe not drop everything and move to help you start a farm when you know nothing about farming, but you know what I mean. Everyone needs someone to keep you grounded and just be there when you need a shoulder to cry on or a couch to sleep on.

Drill and Thuy are that case of opposites attract. She has left that life of violence and chaos behind her in California, however she just can't help but be attracted to him. Their attraction is a bit insta-lovey for my tastes. I do Drill's redemption arc, where he starts to challenge the mindless loyalty to the club. I also really love Thuy's commitment to the library and the kids of the town. I love the library myself and all of it's various uses. I appreciate that she challenged the traditions in a tactful way to get more kids in the library by talking to the kids.

From New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author, Emma Hart comes
A BRAND NEW ROMCOM SERIES starting with the Cover Reveal of FRENEMIES!

Frenemies

There are some things you just have to deal with.

Like your hot as hell college booty call moving in next door with his adorable daughter.
The only time we’ve ever gotten along is under the sheets. Old habits die hard because two minutes on my front porch is how long it takes us to bicker.

Not that a little fact like that bothers my healthy, eighty-year-old grandmother and roommate who’s determined to see me married before she bites the dust.

Unfortunately for me, she’s got her eye set on Cameron Black.

She’s barking up the wrong tree. He’s not The One, no matter how much I swoon when I see him with his daughter. I have no intentions of rekindling anything with him—until a rubber spider in my mailbox starts off the mother of all neighborhood prank wars, just like the ones we had in college, and throws me right into his path.

One that leads right to his bedroom…

Review: Beard Necessities by Penny Reid

Beard Necessities Beard Necessities by Penny Reid
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the long awaited conclusion to the Winston Brother series. It is also the long awaited conclusion to the tumultuous romance between Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire aka Claire McClure. Billy and Claire have been at odds for the entire series, and if you haven't read Beard with Me yet, you need to so you finally understand their relationship. I'm glad they finally got their HEA, and the epilogue is the perfect send off to this series.

This wasn't as angsty and filled with conflict as I expected. Now that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. After all of their fighting, pain, and suffering, it was nice to see them finally work through their issues and get back to that place where they were friends and loved each other. I just think many of us were expecting Billy and Claire/Scarlet to be alot more stubborn about their feelings for alot longer in this book. In fact this book has some of the most swoony quotes I've ever read from a couple that couldn't stand each other just a short while before, which just goes to show the depth of their feelings for each other all along. I expected to learn a bit more about Ben and Claire's relationship, which we did, but I almost feel like that relationship in itself could have gotten an entire book. That part of her life was a bit vague and told in pieces to Billy who already seemed to know parts of the story and to Sienna. Maybe those parts of the story aren't relevant to Billy and Scarlet's love story, but her relationship with Ben was certainly a reason that kept them apart for so long. I just feel like that part of the story could have been a little more clear, after all of the angst and pain of Beard With Me maybe we just don't need to know all of gory the details. While I would have liked a bit more clarity on that whole situation, I do feel like we got enough to get and understanding of what happened.

The entire Winston family gets together at the beginning of the book and plot to get Billy and Scarlet together. They decide on their behalfs that because they love them and they want them both to be happy, that the only course of action is to get them to stop fighting and remember that they love each other and be together. In typical Winston fashion all types of hijinks ensue to ensure that our angst ridden couple find the spark that neither one of them have forgotten and make sure they find romance while on their Italian vacation. I loved that each of the Winston couples played a role in this story. Like with every Penny Reid book the humor is excellent.

This is a standalone, but I'd highly recommend reading the prior books in the series before reading this one. There are so many references to other events that happened in other books. Plus why would you want to miss out on so much Winston awesomeness? While this is the final book in this series, it is not the last of Green Valley or the Winstons. I'm excited for what Penny has in store for us next.

This was another favorite in the Smartypants line up! If you've been keeping up with the releases or you've read the other Green Valley Library offering Love in Due Time, you've met our shy librarian Sabrina Logan. Sabrina is crippled by anxiety and shyness. She's great with kids, but humans older than about 10 cause her to hide in the stacks. She's suffered alot of loss in her life and it has caused her to not trust herself to interact around others, like many of us she'd rather live life between the pages of her favorite books. Enter handsome the handsome sherriff, Wyatt Monroe, who keeps running into Sabrina around town when she's having a hard time with her nephew, her creep of a brother in law, or just life in general. Wyatt is a single dad, whose girls know and love Sabrina from her story hour at the library. He helps her with her autistic nephew after he had a bad day at school, and he and his girls accept him for who he is and his unique personality traits. They don't judge him like other people have, which melts Sabrina's heart because she fiercely protects the boy from any one who will do him any type of harm.

Sabrina and Wyatt have somewhat of an instant attraction, but neither of them want to rush into anything too quickly as they have other responsibilities to consider. As Sabrina makes changes to push herself out of her comfort zone, Wyatt is there to support her as is her best friend Willa, and her amazing family. No one pushes her farther than she is willing to go on her own until she's ready. Wyatt always has his girls best interest at the front of his mind, and is genuinely a good guy. I just really loved their characters and watching their relationship develop.

If you are looking for an angsty romance, this isn't going to be it. This is a sweet romance that is fairly light on the conflict. It has some really funny parts, and at the end of the day is a feel good story. I thought the characters were well developed and it handled the various situations the characters were dealing with respectfully and fairly realistically. Overall I really enjoyed the writing, plot, characters, and setting.

It’s simple really, all she has to do is: learn everything about farming ASAP, save her BBF’s family business from disaster, and avoid being caught staring at Maddy’s biker brother, and his muscles, and his smile, and his soulful, sexy eyes.
