He had a chance.

An opportunity.

Just a small one, but it was there, and he wasn’t going to run away from it.

Not this time.

Never again.

He turned the car into the parking lot, excitement buzzing in his veins.

Every decision in his life had brought him to this moment and he felt good about it.

He was finally ready to embrace life and stop being afraid to be happy.

It was going to be good from here on out—great even.

He hit the brakes as a flash of color and limbs hit his windshield with a loud thud. The car came to a hard stop and the colors rolled off the hood of the car and hit the ground.

“Oh God.” He slammed the car into park and undid his seat belt.

How had that happened?

“Please don’t be a person. Please don’t be a person.” His stomach turned and his hands shook as he shoved the door open.

The hot, sticky July heat engulfed him immediately as he ran around the front of his car.

It was a person.

He dropped to his knees, hands trembling.

He’d hit a person!

With his car!

“Are you okay?” he asked, not sure where to put his hands.

It was a woman in a bright dress. The fabric tangled around her legs, both of her shoes had come off, her arms were tucked under her body at an odd angle.

And the hair…her hair was blonde.

And she was utterly still.

He reached for her, knowing it was Nicole and still hoping it wasn’t.

Footsteps came racing toward him, but he didn’t glance up.

“Call an ambulance,” he said to whoever had joined them and he felt her neck for a pulse.

A flutter under his fingertips let him know she was alive.

Of course, she was alive. The car had barely been moving. It couldn’t possibly be that bad.

Please don’t be that bad.

He pressed his face to the ground to get level with hers and brushed her hair out of her eyes. She was unconscious. Or at least, she appeared to be unconscious. He didn’t want to move her, but he also wanted to be sure she could breathe.

He looked up to see that they were surrounded by some people he knew and some he didn’t.

A dark-haired man in a light blue Henley was on the phone with emergency services.

Sabine joined him on the ground.

Sabine?

He did a double take on his younger sister. Why was she there?

“What happened?” she asked.

“She got hit by a car.”

Sabine’s head jerked around as she looked from André to his car and back again.

Nicole made a noise and they both looked down to her before Sabine could state the obvious.

“Ow,” Nicole whimpered. She tried to move and cried out.

“Don’t move. Where does it hurt?” André placed a hand gently between her shoulder blades and lifted it again.

Nicole ignored his instruction to not move and rolled onto her back. She cradled her right elbow with her left hand, face contorted in pain. Water started leaking from her eyes.

“I’m okay,” she lied through her tears.

André skimmed his fingers along her hairline, brushing away flecks of dirt and gravel. He scanned the scrapes and marks on her face and arms and legs. His stomach twisted with guilt and fear.

“Please stop moving,” he whispered.

If he’d injured her to a point—

No.

He couldn’t go there. She was fine.

Her blue eyes flashed as they raked over his face. Like she was just now realizing who he was.

“What…?” she started to ask and struggled to sit up.

He sucked in a breath and held his hands out, palms facing her. “Stay there.”

She narrowed her eyes at him and all those fantasies that he’d had about seeing her again crumbled into dust like the guy from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who chose the grail that wasn’t so holy.

Sirens grew closer and relief began to prickle in the back of his mind. “It’s okay,” he said, trying to reassure her (and himself). “The paramedics are almost here.”

He couldn’t stop looking at her.

It had been years since he’d seen her, and somehow, she was even more beautiful than he remembered.

All Mixed Up by Heidi Hutchinson

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

As with the other books in the series this reads as a standalone. There are characters mentioned from the previous books by the same author, but they aren't necessary to the storyline of this book. I do highly recommend them as the previous books were excellent. If you want to get to know Johnny and Hannah check out Key Change, if you want to get to know Sabine and Dave (aka Sunshine Capone) check out Lost Track.

Nikki dreams of being a music producer. She works at a small recording studio as an engineer and she is amazingly talented. She has been working with an award winning popstar in secret who she connected with during another recording session. Nikki has what it takes to make this idea a smash hit, but she is letting doubt cloud her judgement. Enter Andre, Nikki's ex and love of her life. Andre is an archeology professor who moonlights as a carpenter on the side. He is also a disaster when it comes to feelings and relationships due to his jerk of a father. Andre sabotaged his relationship with Nikki because he was scared, but he never explained why. He also never stopped loving her. When Nikki's boss hires him to renovate part of the recording studio, the two of them are forced to spend some time together and they are forced to face the past and their feelings for one another.

I really loved getting to know Andre and Nikki. Imposter syndrome is real and dealing with self-doubt about your abilities is so relatable. Even if you are the most qualified person in the world, you can still doubt yourself and I think the author did a great job making both of the characters vulnerable in different ways and brought that forward. I loved that the side characters offered support and advice where needed. I loved Sabine and Dave from Key Change, and it was nice to see them as part of this story as well. I really enjoyed Asa and his no nonsense approach to dealing with Andre and Nikki, just a like a good best friend should act.

I love a good second chance romance and this delivers. The characters had good chemistry, but they don't dive right back into old patterns. They take their time getting to know each other and have the conversations they should have had previously while still maintaining the spark they always had. This has a moderate amount of spice but it isn't over the top and doesn't overwhelm the storyline. Overall, I loved this and highly recommend it as well as the other books in the series!

“Help,” she whispered to no one.

Again, the panic threatened to take over.

She wasn’t an overly anxious person. She liked to think of herself as fairly Zen.

But whatever piece of plastic or thread or glue that had tormented her all day long had driven away her sensibleness and she was now gulping for air, trapped in a jumper.

A prison of her own making.

New fear unlocked: small, confined spaces.

No.

Nope.

She would not die here.

Not like this and not this day.

The studio wasn’t devoid of human life. She’d passed at least two sound engineers on her way to the lounge.

Sure, she didn’t know their names, but she could ask them to help her. Maybe Nikki was working. Nikki seemed nice those two times they had almost interacted. Maybe she would rescue her.

She took a tentative step in the direction she hoped was the door. Another step.

Okay, so far, so good.

Another step and her hip bumped into the edge of the table.

Or was it the counter in the kitchenette?

She tried to rub her hip and butt along the edge to orient herself.

The sound of a door opening spun her around and she almost lost her balance.

“Hello?” she called, hearing the tremor in her voice.

“Hello?” a male voice replied and there was no mistaking the amusement in his tone.

She exhaled loudly and tried to walk toward his voice but collided with the table again.

“You are all turned around,” he said, coming closer. “Just wait.”

“Please help me,” she said. “I’m stuck and I can’t—” She wiggled her arms above her head uselessly. Her fingertips tingled. That couldn’t be good.

“What can I do to help?” he asked, now standing in front of her.

She hinged forward at the hips. “Can you pull the sweater off?”

Silence for a beat and then a deep breath.

He smelled like coffee and fresh air. She wondered which engineer this was. His voice didn’t sound like Johnny, the owner of the studio, and it definitely wasn’t Johnny’s younger brother Shawn because he would have just started laughing and wouldn’t have stopped.

“Okay, I’m going to have to touch you. Is that okay?”

“Yeah,” she replied, slightly confused by his statement. Because it was pretty obvious that if she’d asked him to help her, he was going to have to touch her.

But when cool fingers brushed against the exposed skin near her armpits, she flinched.

Oh, now that made sense.

He tugged on the fabric around her armpits and it didn’t budge.

“Hm,” he said to himself and she sensed him step back. “It’s really stuck.”

She bobbed her upper body in agreement.

Because, duh.

He stepped closer and tried again in a slightly different place.

Nothing changed.

“I don’t want to ruin your sweater,” he said, sounding distressed.

“And I don’t want to die dressed like a traffic cone,” she replied a little more hotly than she should have.

He chuckled and tugged at the sleeves over her head.

“Sorry,” she mumbled.

“You do not have to apologize.” His voice moved like he was walking a circle around her. “Though I don’t think you look like a traffic cone. I actually saw you as one of those inflatable tube man things you see outside car dealerships.”

She laughed despite herself. “That’s not better.”

“You think if I pull straight up, we’ll end up with a finger trap situation? Because that’s what I’m afraid of.”

“I am very willing to risk it.”

“Okay.” He fiddled with the top of the sweater. “Stop me if it hurts.”

She braced.

The fabric tugged, pulled and smashed her face as he worked it off of her. She held her breath, like that would somehow ease the progression. The hem pinched and rolled over her armpits and then…relief.

She sagged forward and then cried out.

“Earring! Earring!” She moved her head with the sweater. Her hands, newly free, gripped his wrists. “Stop!”

He already had stopped. The moment she had cried out he froze.

She let go of him and dove her fingers beneath the loosened fabric to detangle her earrings.

“Okay,” she said, wincing in preparation for more pain.

But the pain was over.

The sweater came away and she took her first full breath in what felt like hours.

“Oh, thank you,” she said, finally getting a look at her rescuer.

Sleepy indigo eyes met hers, and the smile on his face crinkled the stem of the rose tattooed near his right eye.

Here was the thing about working with famous people and their kids, they were too often hypersensitive to people’s attention. She’d learned early on that most didn’t like to be stared at. And because they were hyper-aware of being watched, any kind of eye contact could feel like it was staring.

Rational?

No.

But she understood it enough that looking around them instead of at them was a safe option. At least until new expectations had been established.

So, it was very off-brand (again) for her to have full eye contact with a rock star.

She immediately looked down, but not before she’d clocked the dove tattoo near his hairline and the words “As Yourself” above his left eyebrow. Her gaze dropped to his neckline where a large black and gray tattoo of the sun on his throat was just barely visible from the collar of his gray hoodie.

Sunshine Capone.

So… not really a rock star.

But kind of.

Pop star?

He was more hip-hop, right?

Why was she trying to specify what kind of star he was?

A star was a star.

“Thank you,” she said again.

“Not a problem,” he replied, and his tone caused her eyes to jump back to his, even though it went against all her instincts. He was still smiling. “Are you okay?”

She nodded and chuckled at her own circumstances. “I am now, thanks to you.”

“You’re a real piece of work. You don’t even remember me, do you?” Johnny said the words, knowing for years they were true but feeling that hurtful sting having to admit it out loud. He had been a nobody to her then. He needed to make peace with that.

Ashton shook her head. “I don’t remember most things,” she said, and it had the kind of ring of truth that sounded too real. She rapidly scanned the interior of the townhouse and her gaze paused on his guitar resting in the stand in the living room.

He held his breath for a minute.

The guitar was the one he’d had when they’d first met. Its sound was on her first record.

It wasn’t fancy by any means, but it was and always would be his favorite. A black Gibson orchestra model. The years of wear showed the scratches and bruises of the life of a working musician.

He wondered if she remembered the night she’d sat in his bed, naked, holding that guitar and singing to him.

Because he thought about it all the time.

“I don’t remember you,” she said after a beat, her voice quieter. The admission hurt more than he expected. “But I know that it doesn’t matter. Going with the odds and how you’re looking at me, it was probably pretty awful.”

Johnny wasn’t sure why hearing that didn’t make him feel any better.

Just then the door opened, or it tried to, but it bumped into the bodyguard, who moved to the side and let Shawn in.

The facilitator of Johnny’s current problem.

Shawn frowned in confusion at the bodyguard, and then his gaze drifted to Ashton. All the color drained from his face, and his round eyes darted to Johnny.

“Oh my God,” Shawn whispered.

“Oh, He can’t save you now,” Johnny cautioned.

Shawn dropped his bag on the floor and his hands came up in a placating fashion. Though he couldn’t figure out which person to direct them to. He faced Johnny, then Ashton, then the bodyguard in quick succession.

“I-I-I can’t believe you’re here,” he finally spit out, obviously speaking to Ashton. He spun to Johnny. “It’s her. I told you it was her.”

Johnny ran his tongue over his bottom lip and nodded once.

Shawn shoved both hands through his hair, unable to conceal the sheer joy on his face. “Did-did you listen to it?” he asked Ashton cautiously.

For the first time since Johnny had opened the door, he saw a crack in her exterior as she looked at his younger brother.

“No,” she said after a beat. “I haven’t listened to it.”

Undeterred, and oblivious to the tension in the room, Shawn eagerly grabbed the envelope off the table and removed the thumb drive. “That’s fine. You can listen to it here and then I can get your reactions up close.”

“Shawn,” Johnny tried to get his attention.

“This is better, actually,” Shawn continued, a slight tremor in his voice, which was pitching a little higher. “I mean, I would have invited you over earlier today if I’d known you would say yes.”

“Shawn,” Johnny said louder and sharper.

It got his attention.

“Read the room, bud.”

Shawn’s hands dropped to his side and his shoulders dropped. “I don’t understand. If you’re not here about the music, then why are you here?” he asked.

“I think…” Johnny said with a slight grimace. “That she’s here to pay us to keep quiet? Did I get that right?”

Ashton glared at Johnny.

“Pay us?” Shawn repeated, confused and devastated all at once.

For a split second, guilt sliced through Johnny. But the sooner Shawn figured out who Ashton James really was, the better for him. In the long run.

Though watching him find out that the artist he looked up to was a lying, selfish, horrible person kind of hurt like hell.

Silence descended like a thick fog as Shawn stared at Ashton, waiting for a response.

Finally, she took in a deep breath and let it out. “Who have you told? I really need to know how far this goes. Please.”

Her tone was different than the last time she’d asked that question.

“No one,” Shawn replied roughly. “Just Johnny.” He waved a hand in that direction. “And he didn’t believe me until Saturday when he saw you at the school. Even then, he told me not to do anything about it.” He shrugged helplessly. “But I didn’t listen.”

Her eyes moved to Johnny, looking for honesty and verification.

He hadn’t told Shawn about helping jump her car. He didn’t want to have to answer any uncomfortable questions that he didn’t have the answers to. Like, why was she so different in that moment than the woman he remembered? And was it real? Or did she just get a lot better at faking things?

Shawn took a step toward her, speaking excitedly.

“I was just so happy to finally meet you. I never thought I’d get a chance to, and then one day, I saw you get off the train. I wasn’t looking for you. Ashton, you have to believe me. I would nev—”

“Please don’t call me Ashton,” she stopped him. She regarded both of them carefully. “I haven’t been Ashton James in a very long time. And I have no intention of being her again.”

I've been a long time fan of the Smartypants Romance books. This is the third book in the Common Threads series, but it reads as a complete standalone. The books are more companion novels featuring familiar characters and settings, but they can all be read independently and in any order. This particular installment features a former pop-star in hiding, who would like to stay hidden and the owner of a small recording studio from her past that has never forgotten her. 

Hannah leads a pretty boring life these days, she loves her routines and her anonymity. When she was pop star Aston James, she was always in the public eye and she wasn't the nicest person and she didn't make the best decisions. Now she's much more responsible and has her little sister to worry about. Keeping her sister, Piper safe, healthy and happy is her #1 priority. Her boring routine gets shaken up when a talented busker recognizes her, it just so happens she had a fling with his older brother who is now a music producer. Johnny was hurt by Hannah's alter ego Aston many years ago and doesn't want his brother anywhere near her. Hannah doesn't trust anyone after all the betrayals in her music career, so naturally she is skeptical when Johnny and Shawn offer to keep her identity secret without a bribe or NDA in place. Hannah doesn't remember her time with Johnny, but through a series of events, she ends up working with one of his clients which makes him super uncomfortable. This is a huge client for Johnny and his studio so he puts his feelings aside and lets Hannah do her thing with the young rapper Sunshine Capone. Sunshine likes working with them so much he decides to record his entire album with them as long as Hannah is involved. As Johnny and Hannah work together, her memory of him resurfaces and Johnny warms up to her. While he works on putting the past in the past, they both work on moving forward and look toward the future and what that will mean. 

If you wanted a steamy romance, this isn't the book for you. There is some kissing, but the intimate scene takes place behind closed doors. I think it actually fits the story and the characters pretty well given the slow build up of their romantic relationship and the fragile nature of the characters. This is a little bit of everything, enemies to lovers and slow burn romance. It also deals with addiction and recovery in a very open way. I think alot of musicians and people who find themselves in famous situations deal with drugs and alcohol, so I really appreciate that the author chose to put a very real topic in the book. She also chose to put the main character in therapy to deal with her issues and her situations as a guardian. There were times that you did not like the person Hannah used to be, and she was harsh and aggressive at times, but I also felt like she was relatable. I know people that are abrasive like Hannah, but once you get to know them, they are some of the best people. Overall, I really enjoyed this. I love music, and I love watching behind the scenes clips of my favorite bands when they were recording their albums. I really enjoyed the setting of this and I thought the characters worked really well together. I thought Johnny and Hannah had good chemistry and they both had good development. There were good side characters and great dialogue between everyone in the story.

I thought the narrators did a wonderful job with the characters giving them all a voice. I appreciate when narrators are able to give all of the characters different voices so I know who is involved in dialogue.
