Review: Even If We Break by Marieke Nijkamp

Even If We Break Even If We Break by Marieke Nijkamp
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was provided a copy of this book via the Sourcebooks Early Reads program in exchange for an honest review.  I listened to the first half on audio and completed the book in print.

I was really looking forward to this as I'm a huge thriller fan.  I've never read Nijkamp's work before and this sounded like a promising book based on the synopsis.  Plus the cover is super creepy (which I really love) with the masks.  Unfortunately, the masks don't play into the actual plot, they are more symbolic, and this really fell flat for me as a thriller.  The thriller element is secondary to the personal demons the characters deal with and the personal discovery the characters are forced to go through because of the situation they find themselves in.

We follow 5 friends as they head off to a remote cabin for one final weekend to play a role playing game (RPG) that is reminiscent of Dungeons and Dragons.  This final weekend is supposed to reconnect them before everyone graduates high school and goes their separate ways.  They've all become distant from one another for various reasons, some are explained really well while some are muddled.  The story is told from the perspective of each of the friends, but the main voices are Finn and Ever.  Ever is the game master, and the one who ultimately created the game and the world that the friends once bonded over.  The game is a fantasy based murder mystery game, they each have a persona with skills and costumes, and while each of the friends is different, they have all found common ground in the game.  As the friends begin to play their final game, weird things start to happen and the teens find one of their friends is missing and another has been murdered.  Each of them is quickly being targeted and called out on their deepest darkest flaws.  The remaining three have to solve this murder and get to safety before they fall next.

I do appreciate that this had a diverse cast of characters.  Unfortunately their backstories like the plot felt really jumbled and confusing.  What we do know about them is repeated several times, and the information I wanted explained is never given.  I never felt like I really got to know the characters or connected with them.

Unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me.  I think it was trying to be too many things at once.  As far as thrillers go, this just didn't work for me.

Review: The Not-Outcast by Tijan

The Not-Outcast The Not-Outcast by Tijan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this!  This is the kind of book that you read in 1 day because can't put down and stay up late to finish.  If you are at all triggered by the mention of mental health issues, emotional abuse, or drug use I might skip this one.  I feel like the mental illness was handled respectfully and tastefully in this book.  There are probably alot of people out there just like Cheyenne who are treated just as badly if not worse because of where they came from or how they act because people don't get to know them or understand them.  Unfortunately, there are probably alot of people like Cheyenne who don't get help or have a support network like she does either.  I love that Tijan wrote a character that so amazing despite her circumstances.  I also love that she wrote a male lead who is humble despite his.  Cut while having come from a privileged background and having made it as a pro athlete hasn't let it go to his head.  He's still a decent guy.

I was a little worried that I wasn't going to like this book because the first couple of chapters were a little confusing, but that speaks to the way our main character Cheyenne processes the world.  As we get to know her, her background, what's she's been through, and how she operates things become clear and I really came to love her.

Initially Cut and Cheyenne's relationship is very instalove/instalust driven.  They do eventually settle into an actual relationship, taking things slow and getting to know one another.  I did appreciate that as it was very important that Cut see all of Cheyenne's highs and lows.  She was conditioned at an early age that people would abandon her and run when she wasn't at her best, and she wasn't sure how to handle things when Cut was willing to stay and be supportive when she was having a rough time.  He wanted to learn about her and understand what she needed in a bad moment and how he could support her even if it meant leaving her alone until she was in a better state of mind.  He was also willing to give up his best friend who was not willing to understand that Cheyenne did not come from a good family situation, and that she was not her mother.  Instead of having empathy, Cheyenne's father, stepmother, and stepbrother all basically treated her like a criminal and threw her to the wolves to fend for herself as a teen and never looked back.  They never got to know her or treat her like a human.

This has amazing side characters!  Cheyenne's two best friends Melanie and Sasha are supportive and hilarious.  The bring a bit of comic relief to the seriousness of dealing with the mental health issues.  Hunter is amazing as well.  The younger half brother to Cheyenne, their silly text and email conversations are light-hearted, and show how big Cheyenne's heart is.  I also love Cut's mom, Alice.  I really relate to her being the loudest mom at all the games.  I'm not violent with my cheering (my kids don't play hockey) but I'm still the loudest fan and mom in the gym!

This is so great!  Fans of Tijan's in general are going to devour this book!  If you love her other sports romances you are not going to be disappointed and won't be able to put it down.  It is light on the hockey, and I would have liked to see a bit more of the game in the book just because I like hockey.  I do feel that would have taken away from the mental health aspects of the book and it wouldn't have been the same.  I think Tijan made the right choice to keep her focus on Cheyenne and not the hockey.    The romance is spot on and the steam factor is through the roof.  Cut and Cheyenne have amazing chemistry!  This book will take you on a rollercoaster ride through every emotion but it is worth every minute.

Review: The Midnight Bargain

The Midnight Bargain The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I did opt to listen to the final version of the audiobook, which I highly recommend. The narrator does a wonderful job bringing this story to life.

If you enjoy historical fiction, romance, feminism, and fantasy this is the book for you. This is set in the time of what feels like Regency England, where social status is everything and who you marry during "bargaining season" means everything. Both men and women practice magic by summoning spirits to aid them, but men are allowed to pursue the practice of magic and become powerful Magus, while women are stripped of their magic as soon as they are married. Their magic is bound with a suppression collar to protect any children they may give birth to. Women are only valued for the financial and political gain they bring to the marriage and the children they will bear in their future husbands.

Enter Beatrice Clayborn, a powerful sorceress who has no interest in getting married or collared. She wants to help her father with his business by becoming a Magus. To do so she must practice magic on her own in secret. Unfortunately, her family is in debt and needs her to make a good match during the bargaining season. Beatrice finds a book that may be the key to her desires, but she is thwarted by another young lady, Ysbeta, who has similar goals but much higher social standing. Beatrice finds herself befriendinding the sorceress and they practice their magic together, however she finds that she is developing feelings for Ysbeta's brother Ianthe. This gives Beatrice mixed feelings because she doesn't believe she can have love and magic at the same time.

Overall I enjoyed this! The magic system is quite unique but like many other readers, I would have liked it to be a bit more flushed out. Then again as Ianthe explains to Beatrice, it is all quite mysterious so perhaps it was meant to be that way for the reader. I really liked the way Beatrice stuck to her beliefs and fought for herself to have equal footing amongst the men and Ianthe always supported her and Ysbeta in their happiness. This was my first book by Polk and I'm looking forward to reading more!

If you've ever had a steamy one-night stand with a British football player and then find yourself pregnant with his baby, you know how Lia Ward feels.

To be fair, Lia didn't know who Jude McAllister was when they met.

Studying abroad for her master's program, all she knows is that she's a little lonely and he's very charming, even as they have an epically sexy argument about which type of football is superior.

In Jude's mind, shagging the feisty American girl is exactly what he needs. He’s been fighting the clock of his long-standing football career and the younger players primed to take his position. Proving that he can feel like his old self again—something he's been trying to do with everyone in his life—should be easier after blowing off steam with Lia.

But oh baby, when a plus sign pops up on Lia's pregnancy test, that 'one night' becomes a whole lot more.

Now Lia and Jude have to navigate their impossible-to-ignore chemistry, and prepare for the parenting game, something neither of them know how to play.

Well, let’s see ... I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone's face, then I've done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I'll love you forever.

Review: Bound by Forever by S. Young

Bound by Forever Bound by Forever by S. Young
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review.

It is no secret that I love this series! This installment is no exception, I thought this was the final book but there is one more which is a happy surprise. So far each book in this series is a standalone with an interconnected storyline. The ending of this book gives you a glimpse of what you can expect in the next book, but I would say you could have read this without having read the previous two books in the series. This book does stand on its own two feet and while it does have some foreshadowing for what comes next, doesn't have a cliffhanger ending. The story closes nicely, but promises that there is more to come.

This follows Niamh, who has been present in the previous books helping both Thea and Rose in their previous journeys. Niamh is one of the few remaining fae born children left, and she is burdened by her knowledge of the fae world and her gifts. She's been in hiding for most of her life, but when her brother is killed and she can't use her gift of visions to save him she loses herself. Enter Kiyo, an immortal werewolf who has been hired to protect Niamh from other supernaturals who may want to use her or harm her and protect her from herself as she's going down a path of destruction in the wake of her brother's death. The two of them don't immediately hit it off and grate on each other's nerves until Niamh has a vision involving Kiyo. Realizing that he is somehow involved in the path she is supposed to take to save the remaining fae born, she agrees to work with him. Kiyo realizes that if he is going to succeed as her protector, he has to open up to her a bit if they are going to build any trust. Having been a lone wolf for so long, he hasn't put his trust in anyone in a long time, but he finds it easy to confide in Niamh even when she does things that infuriate him.

As they follow her visions to Tokyo, things heat up as old debts are called in to be paid and new enemies surface. Niamh and Kiyo have to continue working on their trust to make their partnership work as they try to uncover what is going on and how they can save the other fae born and the world. All the while dealing with all sorts of difficulties, Kiyo and Niamh can't fight the blossoming attraction forming between them. When they finally give into their feelings, the sparks literally fly and let me tell you the steam factor is through the roof. Their relationship is a slow burn, but it is so worth it when it finally happens. All I have to say is that hair washing scene was amazing!!!

I absolutely adore this series, the characters Samantha has created, and I can't wait for the next one!

Review: Hidden Ember by J.M. Miller

Hidden Ember Hidden Ember by J.M. Miller
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the final installment of the Fallen Flame Trilogy. I fell in love with Fallen Flame a few years ago, and I really love this series. If you love fantasy and mythology this is a good one to check out.

The pace of this one is a bit slow as most of the book is setting up for the final battle and Vala has to deal with her potential loss of humanity she defeats Verdandi. It definitely picks up as the battle nears and the action scenes intensify. If you haven't read the previous books, you really do need to as this is not a standalone. Verdandi and Vala are goddesses made human, one is trying to save the world while the other is trying to destroy it. The team Vala and Xavyn have assembled are racing across the lands to gain allies to stop Verdandi from ending the world. Vala fears that she will become the goddess she was before when she reconnects with her final feather or pith and while she will save the world she will lose herself and those she has come to love. We get alot of good character development in this with not only Vala but the other characters as well. There are quite a few returning characters from books 1 and 2. I like when I get closure on character arcs, especially side characters I've come to love.

The author really pulls on our heartstrings in this installment, and she certainly doesn't pull any punches as she takes us on this final journey. There were quite a few "that didn't just happen moments" before it was all over. I think this is the perfect conclusion to this series!

Review: Her Alpha Dog by Katana Collins

Her Alpha Dog Her Alpha Dog by Katana Collins
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the first of 3 steamy novellas coming in November 2020.  I believe they are all set in the world of the Silhouette Studios series, don't hold me to that as I am still slowly making my way through the author's backlist.  This is roughly 70 pages and follows Josh Murphy, a well known actor and Chelsea Griffin, his new dog walker.  Josh has a husky names Cola, and he works long hours on set.  His trusted dog walker has left for grad school and recommended Chelsea for the job.  Cola immediately takes to Chelsea, and Josh likes her too.  As they get to know each other, they find it hard to deny that the attraction between them.

I was really impressed that we actually got alot of relationship development in such a short story.  The author uses the timeline to her advantage to allow the characters to get to know each other off page, which gives the reader the satisfaction that there is substance to the relationship and it isn't all insta-love and lust driven.  That is hard to is a novella, but I felt it was done really well here.   Don't get me wrong the are plenty of lust filled moments in this short little story.

If you are looking for a light, fun read I highly recommend this.  I really enjoyed it!

Review: Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: Book 3 by Dianna Love

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: Book 3 Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador World: Book 3 by Dianna Love
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided and advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This picks up where book 2 left off. Deagan and Casidhe are still looking for the grimoires while still looking for their friends. This moves pretty quickly and alot happens in this installments. The clock is ticking for those possessed by Imortiks and the Tribunal is getting less and less willing to work with the Beladors as more incidents occur. I always find it hard to review this series without spoilers. Love packs quite a bit of action into a short amount of time in these serials.

We get some movement on what is happening with Quinn and Reese, though there are still plenty of unanswered questions there. Daegan and Casidhe come to a sort of truce in an attempt to actually find the grimoire and save their friends and loved ones. The finally make some progress on their trust issues and I expect to see their relationship thaw out quite a bit more as the series continues to progress. I do love the snark though! I think the characters are all developing nicely with the pace of the plot.

This is book 3 of a 9 part series, and it ends with a cliffhanger and alot of unanswered questions. I know there is alot more to the series so that doesn't bother me as much as it normally would in a series. I know the books are coming in quick succession so I won't have to wait much longer for the next installment to find out what happens next and where the story is headed. I have some theories of my own, but we'll see how they play out. I'm really enjoying this series so far. I love that it has a mixture of the original Belador characters as well as some new ones. I'm anxious for the next book to find out what happens.
