Review: Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 by Dianna Love

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 by Dianna Love
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review.  This book was released today September 22, 2020.  It is available in ebook and audio, and a bind-up of books 1-3 will be available in October.  Purchase links are at the bottom of the post.

I am a long time reader of Dianna’s and a long time reader of the Belador series, though I will admit that I’ve only gotten up to book 6 Witchlock of the original series.  That being said, I think you could start with this one and be OK.  It makes references to things that happened in the original series, but the author gives you enough information to go on and not be completely in the dark.  As a fan of the original series, I am inspired to hit my shelves and finish the last four books in that series.  I’ve clearly missed quite a bit.  If you are new to Dianna’s writing or this world in general, I don’t think it will be too confusing and I don’t think you need to go back and read that series first.  I do highly recommend it though!  If you are a long time fan of the series, you will be happy to be back in Atlanta with all of your favorite characters from the original series, while getting to know some new characters.

This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the first three books will be release about a month apart and all 9 books in the series will be out in the next year.  I enjoy serial novella type books when they are released in quick succession so I don’t’ have to wait, and I can deal with a cliffhanger in each one knowing that the next book will be out in a few weeks.  That being said this book is just getting things started with the plot and characters.  We are just getting to know Daegan and Casidhe when things take an unexpected turn.  The back stories of both characters are just starting to reveal their abilities and the roles they are going to play in the story.  We are also introduced to several villains, some new and some familiar.  The world building so far has been great.  The story takes place in several different locations from a modern day Atlanta to small village in Ireland, while other parts take place in fantasy realms created by the author.  I love Dianna’s creativity with the fantasy character’s she has created and the detail in which she describes them.

This particular installment follows Daegan who has recently taken over as leader of the Beladors.  He also happens to be a dragon shifter.  He has recently been freed from a very long imprisonment and he is determined to protect his people and prevent them from befalling the same fate as his family did all those years ago.  Unfortunately, the supernatural world has different plans.  A new race of supernatural threatens to expose the Beladors and supernatural beings in general to the rest of the world unless Daegan can find a long lost set of grimoires.  The offer has been made to other powerful beings so the race is on, but Daegan’s prize is protecting his people.  Enter Casidhe, she has a talent for reading ancient texts and might be able to help Daegan find the lost books.  She also may have some hidden supernatural abilities that we have only begun to scratch the surface of.  I’m very much looking forward to learning more about how these two are connected and how they learn to work together to find the books and save the Beladors.
