Review: Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 by Dianna Love

Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 Treoir Dragon Chronicles of the Belador world: Book 1 by Dianna Love
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review.  This book was released today September 22, 2020.  It is available in ebook and audio, and a bind-up of books 1-3 will be available in October.  Purchase links are at the bottom of the post.

I am a long time reader of Dianna’s and a long time reader of the Belador series, though I will admit that I’ve only gotten up to book 6 Witchlock of the original series.  That being said, I think you could start with this one and be OK.  It makes references to things that happened in the original series, but the author gives you enough information to go on and not be completely in the dark.  As a fan of the original series, I am inspired to hit my shelves and finish the last four books in that series.  I’ve clearly missed quite a bit.  If you are new to Dianna’s writing or this world in general, I don’t think it will be too confusing and I don’t think you need to go back and read that series first.  I do highly recommend it though!  If you are a long time fan of the series, you will be happy to be back in Atlanta with all of your favorite characters from the original series, while getting to know some new characters.

This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the first three books will be release about a month apart and all 9 books in the series will be out in the next year.  I enjoy serial novella type books when they are released in quick succession so I don’t’ have to wait, and I can deal with a cliffhanger in each one knowing that the next book will be out in a few weeks.  That being said this book is just getting things started with the plot and characters.  We are just getting to know Daegan and Casidhe when things take an unexpected turn.  The back stories of both characters are just starting to reveal their abilities and the roles they are going to play in the story.  We are also introduced to several villains, some new and some familiar.  The world building so far has been great.  The story takes place in several different locations from a modern day Atlanta to small village in Ireland, while other parts take place in fantasy realms created by the author.  I love Dianna’s creativity with the fantasy character’s she has created and the detail in which she describes them.

This particular installment follows Daegan who has recently taken over as leader of the Beladors.  He also happens to be a dragon shifter.  He has recently been freed from a very long imprisonment and he is determined to protect his people and prevent them from befalling the same fate as his family did all those years ago.  Unfortunately, the supernatural world has different plans.  A new race of supernatural threatens to expose the Beladors and supernatural beings in general to the rest of the world unless Daegan can find a long lost set of grimoires.  The offer has been made to other powerful beings so the race is on, but Daegan’s prize is protecting his people.  Enter Casidhe, she has a talent for reading ancient texts and might be able to help Daegan find the lost books.  She also may have some hidden supernatural abilities that we have only begun to scratch the surface of.  I’m very much looking forward to learning more about how these two are connected and how they learn to work together to find the books and save the Beladors.

Check out Dianna's website for an excerpt and to stay updated on the series.  She also has a ton of other great books you should go check out while you are there. Click here to read an excerpt!

COVER REVEAL: I Promise You by Ilsa Madden-Mills

I Promise You, an all-new swoony sports romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills is coming October 12th, and we have the hot, hot, hot cover!

Dillon McQueen: Babe. I promise. You want me.
Serena Jensen: Um, who are you?

There’s a legend at Waylon University: the first girl you kiss freshman year at the bonfire party is the one you’ll never forget. She’ll crawl under your skin and never leave. She’ll spark a passion so fierce you’ll burn the world down to possess her.

You might even put a ring on it.

As in all things with fate, timing is everything. That kiss can go horribly wrong. She might run in the opposite direction. And boy, did Serena run.

Dillon is Waylon’s hotshot quarterback with something to prove. All he wants is to graduate and make it to the NFL. What he doesn’t need is to finally meet the mystery girl he kissed at the bonfire freshman year. Isn’t it enough that she’s haunted his dreams for more than a thousand nights?

Fate laughs in his face when he runs into the quirky girl at the Piggly Wiggly. Surrounded by his entourage, he’s got all the Oreos in his cart; she gets revenge by buying every six-pack of his favorite beer.

Obviously, that legend is a curse. She’s not his type and hates him. Worst of all, how can she not remember him when she left a Serena-shaped hole in his heart for the past three years?

So why can’t he stop trying to win her?

Will this quarterback score the girl or make the biggest fumble of his life?

Review: The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson

The Loop The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was one of the more creative horror/thrillers I've read in quite a while.  I really liked the sci-fi aspect.  This is not for the faint of heart as it is pretty violent and grisly.  If that doesn't bother you and you are looking for a biotech zombie like horror show pick this up.  It is action packed and pretty much never stops moving once things start to go bad.

Not only is this a horror book, but it touches on the human condition as well.  Johnson also hits on bullying, racism, survival, ethics in science, and a lot more.  This really shows up in the friendship dynamics between the main character Lucy and the relationships she develops as she tries to survive this biotech nightmare.

If you are easily offended or triggered by gore or violence of any kind, I wouldn't recommend this book.  The story takes place is less than 24 hours so it doesn't pull any punches to keep things moving along.  If you are looking for a weird, creative story, and are OK with graphic violence give this a go.  I'm a horror fan, so I did enjoy this, but it made me uncomfortable at times.  That is a sign of a good horror or thriller, so job well done by the author.

Review: To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided a copy of the audiobook via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  This will be released on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

This is fantastic, I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could! Why not 5 stars you ask? My only real issue is the length of the story. When the description says that this is an epic space opera, it means EPIC. This is vast and covers alot of ground, well space. The print book will be almost 900 pages and the audiobook was 32 and a half hours long. That is a huge commitment for an audiobook (I normally opt for the print version of such long tomes), however I found myself opting to listen to the audiobook instead of reading traditionally over and over because I was so invested in the storyline. The characters and plot suck you in and keep you invested. I do feel like there were a few parts that could have been condense or were a bit repetitive, but they were also necessary to transition the story or move a plot point forward. We almost get two endings in this book. I thought the book had ended and we'd get an epilogue, but it kept going with the promise of more potential books in this world, which I would happily devour.

I highly recommend the appendix as it has tons of reference material to the science used in the creation of the book as well as a glossary that explains some of the characters, concepts, and terms used. While this adds quite a bit of length to the audio, I appreciated that this was included as often these parts are left out of audio versions. I learned so much from this section and it will be invaluable to readers, and would have been a great reference while listening. I also loved the author's note and the interview at the end between the author and the narrator. It was a treat to get some insight into the creation of this book as well as the recording of the audiobook. It helps the reader to understand where the book started why it ended where it did. We also get a bit of a teaser that there may be more coming in this universe. Jennifer Hale is a fantastic narrator, it is hard to believe this is her debut as an audiobook narrator. I hope she continues narrating books! There are quite a few characters in this book and she did an amazing job giving life to all of them. I plan on purchasing a copy when this is available as the author mentions some amazing artwork in the print copy.

If you are a fan of Paolini's previous work in the Eragon series, as I am, you won't be disappointed. This has his wonderful writing style and great world building. I loved all of the characters. He dreamt up this amazing sentient alien race and they all look a bit different though they feature qualities of earth's sea life and have a unique way of communicating. He describes them in such detail that you can really begin to envision what they look like. The same goes for the spacecraft, the other characters, and the action scenes. The action scenes can get a little violent and gruesome, so reader be warned. He doesn't hold back when it comes to the fighting, some of the scenes are like a horror novel. Because the book is lengthy we get tons of character development and backstory on all of the side characters, which is something often overlooked in books. I loved that the author took the time to give each of the characters personality, a backstory, and they all played a role in Kira's journey. We get to watch Kira evolved from a human, to a human invaded by this xeno organism, to something else entirely.

I really appreciate that Paolini tried to keep to actual science (he mentions this in his afterward). He had a vision for what he wanted the space travel to look like without breaking all of the rules of science to make it work. While he takes his liberties with the science to make it fit his vision, it isn't all a figment of his imagination. You can tell that he really put time, research, and effort into the creation of his sci fi universe from the tech the humans use to assist in their day to day tasks and military efforts, the space travel, the religions, and the creatures. It makes for a really enjoyable journey.

If you are a fan of space operas, sci-fi, or Paolini's previous books, I 100% recommend this! I'm so honored to have gotten a chance to read this early. This will take you on quite the journey of unbelievable science, action, creatures, and emotions. I just finished it and I want to reread it because I miss the characters already.

BLOG TOUR: A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I was provided an ARC via the Author in exchange for an honest review.  This book was released on September 1, 2020 and is available at your favorite retailer, purchase links are toward the bottom of the post if you still haven't purchased a copy.  In this post you will find the synopsis of the book, my review, a nail look inspired by A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, purchase links for the book, the author's bio, and a giveaway at the bottom for reading through all of it.

Synopsis:

A Betrayal…

Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

A Choice...

Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret…

But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.

Review and Nail Look:

I won't do a huge recap in my review because the synopsis above does a pretty good job setting the scene without spoilers.

I absolutely loved this.  It does end with quite the cliffhanger so be warned, but there were hints along the way that were kind of leading up to that reveal and while it wasn't exactly what I was thinking, I was pretty close.  It leaves you wanting the third book right away, but as of now it doesn't have a release date.  I expect Jen won't keep us waiting too long.

This leaves us off where the first book ends.  Poppy is hurt and angry with Hawke/Casteel for betraying her trust and she runs through the gambit of emotions to work through that.  They both have to deal with their feelings for each other as well as how they are going to move forward with their futures.  Casteel has people counting on him to make the right decisions, and it is no secret that he has ulterior motives when it comes to Poppy.  Poppy finally able to make her own choices in life outside of her sheltered life as The Maiden, finds herself surrounded by people that either don't trust her or outright hate her for what her title represented.  On top of all of that, her gifts are expanding and she has to deal with her powers expanding and the fear that her abilities bring forth in others.  We get more background on Casteel and how it has shaped him as well as more into the world of being an Atlantian.

A lot of time is spent on the relationship building and the world building so the pace is a bit slower than I would have liked.  This book is fairly long to begin with, and there are times when the paces drags a bit because it is character driven or descriptive versus being action driven.  I don't mind when the author takes time to actually explain the world or magic system.  There are still lots of unanswered questions, but we have at least 1 if not 2 more books coming in this series.  The action scenes are fast paced, chaotic, and bloody.  Jen doesn't usually write more graphic action scenes but I thought she did a good job with them here.  As for the romance and the steam element, this doesn't leave you wanting.  The author is hinting at a possible relationship between Poppy, Casteel, and Kieran which is something I haven't seen from her yet and if the scenes between Poppy and Casteel are any indication of what we are going to see in the future, sexual tension will be high and will not disappoint.  This is much more adult than the first book, in both content and description.  If you were expecting a YA Fantasy novel, this isn't it.  This definitely is an adult romance set in a fantasy world.

The banter in this is wonderful.  Whether it is Poppy with Casteel or Poppy and Kieran, or really any of the characters the dialogue is a pleasure to read.  There is quite a bit of dialogue in this book, so if that isn't your cup of tea you may not enjoy this.  I enjoyed it and really felt like I was getting to know the characters.

Overall, I gave this 5 stars.  It has everything I want from a fantasy and everything I want from a steamy romance.  I think the characters Jen has created, share traits with other fantasy/paranormal characters we've seen before but they have unique elements making them her own creation.  I love her creativity in creating the Wolven, the Ascended, the Craven, and the Atlantians as well as an entire pantheon of Gods and Goddesses to complement the story.

I loved the idea of creating a nail look for the book as part of the blog tour.  Nail polish is one of my hobbies, and I actually had a very short lived nail blog at one point.  I took inspiration from the cover and the story itself for my nail look.  If you've read the story you'll get the reference to the gold leaves and the blood tree.  The wedding rings are fairly obvious and the swirls made me think of the mist that is ever present in both books.  I loved creating this look and maybe this will be come a new thing on the blog.  I love stamping and pulled out some plates and polishes I haven't used in quite some time, so they may or may not still be available.

Polishes used:  Rica Whiteout, Avon Metallic Effects Gold and Silver, Sinful Colors Tantalize, KL Polish Havana Nights, Sephora by OPI Blasted Silver
Stamping Plates used:  Bundle Monster BM-H22, Winstonia W102 & W119, Pueen47

Excerpt

“We go home to marry, my Princess.” As in get married? To him? Suddenly, I thought of all those girlish fantasies I’d had before I learned who I was and what was expected of me—daydreams given life because of the love my parents had for one another. Never once did those little-girl dreams include a proposal that wasn’t remotely an actual proposal. Nor did they incorporate it being announced at a table full of strangers, half of which wanted me dead. And those dreams surely hadn’t involved what had to be the kingdom’s worst—and possibly most insane—non-proposal of marriage to a man currently holding me captive. Perhaps I had some sort of ailment of the brain. Maybe I was experiencing hallucinations brought on by stress. After all, there had been so much painful death to process. His betrayal to deal with. And I’d just learned I was descended from Atlantia, a kingdom I’d been raised to believe was the source of all the evil and tragedy in the land. Stress-induced hallucinations seemed a far more believable reason than what was actually happening. All I could do was stare at the larger hand holding my much smaller one. His skin was slightly darker than mine as if kissed by the sun. Years of wielding a sword with deadly, graceful precision had left his palms callused. He lifted my hand to an indecently well-formed and full mouth. To lips that were somehow soft yet unrelentingly firm. Lips that had spun beautiful words into the air and whispered heated, wicked promises against my bare skin. Lips that had paid homage to the many scars that riddled my body and face. Lips that had also spoken blood-soaked lies. Now, that mouth was pressed against the top of my hand in a gesture that I would’ve cherished for an eternity and thought exquisitely tender just days or weeks ago. Simple things like hand-holding or chaste kisses had been forbidden to me. As were being wanted or feeling desire. I had long since accepted that I would never experience those things. Until him. I lifted my gaze from our joined hands, from that mouth that was already curving up on one side, hinting at a dimple in the right cheek, and from the slowly parting lips that revealed just a hint of fatally sharp fangs. His hair brushed the nape of his neck and toppled over his forehead, and the thick strands were such a deep shade of black, it often shone blue in the sunlight. With high and angular cheekbones, a straight nose, and a proud, carved jaw, he often reminded me of the large, graceful cave cat I had seen once in Queen Ileana’s palace as a child. Beautiful, but in the way all wild, dangerous predators were. My heart stammered as my eyes locked onto his, orbs a shade of stunning, cool amber. I knew I was staring at Hawke—
