Things are about to get sticky...

Beefcakes, an all-new hilarious, second-chance standalone romance from Katana Collins, is coming March 24th and we have the FIRST sneak peek!

9.11_Beefcakes

I might as well permanently add the label "Ex" to my name. I'm an Ex-Mr. Universe. Ex-Mr. Olympus. An Ex-Hollywood Stuntman. But no one from my small hometown cares anything about that. They only care that I'm the ex-boyfriend to the beloved Mayor's daughter, Elaina Dyker.
And now, ten years later, I'm back, helping my siblings run my mother's bakery while she takes on chemo. What should have been a routine cupcake delivery turns into utter chaos when the bachelorette party thinks I'm a stripper. And what's worse? Elaina is the maid of honor.
But the meme about us sure went viral fast. My small hometown has become positively infested with tipsy bridesmaids looking for my erotic cupcakes.
Now Hollywood's knocking again—and this time they want me and my ex, Mr. Beefcake and Ms. Prude, to star in a reality show.
It could solve all my problems—except her.

Excerpt

I arched my brow at her. “I bragged about knowing you so well…but man. I did not see this almond croissant massacre coming. What do you have against almonds? Or was it the amount of butter that offended you? Because as a fitness expert, let me tell you butter isn’t the enemy. Sugar is the enemy.”

She laughed. “I, uh…I might have some anger management issues.”

I took the bag from her and peeked in. There were knuckle marks against the outside of the croissant. Literal knuckle marks. I barked a laugh. “Elaina Dyker. Did you punch the croissant?”

She laughed, pressing her lips together as though this would hide the fact that I saw her adorable little giggle. She brought her thumb and forefinger up beside her temple. “Maybe a little.”“Did you even try a bite?”

She shook her head no. “I like my routine. I like my daily lunch of yogurt and almonds.”

I made a face. Because she had to be exaggerating. Sure…she liked them. But having that same thing every day? Even chocolate cake every day would get tedious. “You can like yogurt and almonds but still indulge every now and then, you know.” I reached in and pinched off a piece of the smashed croissant, holding it out toward her lips. “C’mon. Live a little. I promise you, it is actually healthy, if that’s your concern.” Not that she needed to be concerned about that. “Almond flour. Gluten free. Grain free. Only two net carbs. The only sugar is the honey in the honey roasted almonds and the natural sugar in dates.” Her eyes grew wide at that and I knew I had hooked her.

She reached out her hand to take the piece of croissant from me, but I pulled back. “Nuh-uh,” I teased. “We can’t have your fingers getting sticky. Might ruin that fancy suit you’re wearing.”

She rolled her eyes, but parted her wet lips, her tongue peeking out just enough for me to place the croissant on top of. She moaned as soon as it hit her mouth, and her eyes fell closed as she slowly chewed and swallowed. “That’s…that’s healthy?”

I nodded. “See? I’m not just a pile of muscles. I’ve got some talent, too.”

Her head fell to the side. “I never said you weren’t talented. I just wish you wouldn’t show off quite so much of your other assets.”

I grinned. “I thought you liked my assets?”

“I do,” she answered absentmindedly, then immediately shook her head, realizing what she’d said. “I mean, I did.”

About Katana

As an author and a story-teller, it is the lifeblood to which my ideas take flight. And I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Occasionally someone (ie – my husband) will try to secretly switch out my beloved regular coffee for decaf. I always know the difference. ALWAYS (I’m looking at you, SEAN).

I am incapable of achieving the perfect ponytail. I’m dyslexic. I can never wear white without spilling on myself. And I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice (gasp!).

When I was younger and stole my mother’s Harlequins to read beneath the covers with a flashlight (seriously, did we ALL do this? I think we did.), I wanted to read about the tough as nails heroine. The perfectly imperfect girl with quirks and attitude and sass. And the anti-heroes who were anything but “Prince Charming.” Forget the knight on a white horse… give me the bad boy on a motorcycle.

So, now, I write those romance novels I craved to see on the shelves all those years ago—the sassy heroines. The badass heroes. I spend my days in the throes of my imagination, and am loving every minute of it. I can travel anywhere and become anyone I want to be. One day, I’m a mechanic in Boston and the next, I’m a vampire stripping in Las Vegas.

Since penning my first novel back in 2012, I’m now an international author with 15 published books, in a wide range of contemporary romance genres–(Paranormal, New Adult, Small town, Erotic Suspense… you name it!).

After living for a decade in Brooklyn, NY, I took the plunge and moved to beautiful (although kinda chilly) Portland, Maine. I now live full time in ‘Vacationland’ with a kind of mean cat, a mellow chihuahua, and a very NOT mellow lab-pittie mix. Oh, yeah… there’s a husband who draws comics somewhere in that mix, too. I can usually be found in a coffee shop with my nose in my laptop wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

I love connecting with readers and fellow sassy storytellers, so feel free to drop me an email at katana.collins@gmail.com or connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (@katanacollins). You can find a list of my available books over on my Bookshelf or if you’ve already read a book, it would make my day if you wrote a review!

Excerpt:

As I stood in the doorway, I took in the bar. It had a decent-size crowd considering it was a Tuesday night. The mix of patrons was as eclectic as the decor. It was all very Kody. The building was an old barn, so the interior had a lot of western elements, including old whiskey barrels for tables. But there were also brightly colored artwork and neon signs brightening up the space. Instead of the big lighting fixture in the middle of the bar being made out of antlers or wrought iron, it was an intricate mix of colorful glass beads. The whole thing was very country and western meets boho chic. The people filling up the seats were mostly Loveless residents. They included the guys gathered near the bar dressed in leather, covered in tattoos, and rocking club colors. The Sons of Sorrow motorcycle club had moved into the hill country on the outskirts of Loveless years after Id left town. Now their flashy bikes and intimidating presence were as commonplace as pickup trucks and horse trailers. It made sense they liked Kodys bar since it was between town and their clubhouse, but I didnt have to like it.

I really didnt like the way the large, dark-haired man leaning across the bar looked at Kody. I knew from Case that Palmer Shot” Caldwell was the current president of the Texas branch of the club. Id taken it upon myself to learn more about the man when he ended up in the middle of the last case that brought me home. Shot was a former marine, a decorated sniper, the son of the founder of the club, and someone Kody was inexplicably close to. Everything about her relationship with the biker set my teeth on edge and had me wanting to make a claim I had no right to stake.
As I stepped forward, the heavy wooden door shut with a bang behind me and drew the eyes of the people sitting closest to me. I saw a couple of looks of recognition, and some people purposely looking away. I nodded and touched the tip of my finger to the brim of my hat in a fairly polite greeting. These people werent my friends. No one in this town had tried to help my brother when he needed it the most, and I would never forget that. Unlike the Lawton kids, Id left Loveless in the rearview mirror and planned on never looking back. All of my worst memories were here. So was the one person I wanted more than anything but knew I could never have.

Under the dim bar lights, I met Kodys gaze across the room. She looked pale. Her wild mane of multicolored blond hair was messier than usual, and she appeared to be swaying slightly every time she let go of her hold on the bar. Her eyes narrowed, and at first, I thought she was giving me a dirty look, but the next instant her entire body lurched and she toppled over, listing to the side and disappearing behind the wide, long bar.

My heart stopped for a split second and I had to bite my tongue to stop from screaming her name. I found myself in dangerous, deadly situations due to my job, but I couldnt recall a single instance when I had been as terrified as I was in that moment Kody went down.

I heard the biker shout her name and was vaguely aware of him kicking back his bar stool as he jumped to his feet. I was moving before I had time to weigh whether it was a good idea. Kody didnt like it when I was in her space. Shed told me she hated me and ordered me to leave her alone on more than one occasion, but none of that stopped me from reaching the bar in record time. It didnt slow me down when I planted a hand near the bikers empty drink and vaulted over the top of the bar.
I landed on the floor in front of Kody, ignoring the shouts and commotion coming from all directions. I waved off the bartender hovering uncertainly behind Kody and quietly asked, Are you okay, Kody?”

The answer was obvious when, instead of biting my head off, her big, bright-green eyes flooded with tears and her shoulders started to shake with silent sobs. Having people burst into tears as I was talking to them, was a pretty common occurrence considering my line of work. Id developed a natural immunity to tears of all kinds. But not to Kodys. Hearing her breath catch and watching her eyelashes get spiky and damp as she struggled to hold the tears back made my heart twist painfully in my chest.

Review: Unforgiven by Jay Crownover

Unforgiven: Includes a bonus novella Unforgiven by Jay Crownover
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Can you believe this is the first time I'm reading Jay Crownover? I must have been living under a rock or something.

I was provided an advanced copy of this book via Netgalley in exchanged for an honest review.  This will be published on February 25, 2020 and includes a bonus novella, Cowboy to the Rescue by A.J. Pine.  This review only covers Unforgiven.

I will be the first one to admit that this is not normally the type of book I would pick up solely based on the cover. At first glance this looks like a steamy romance featuring a cowboy. I'm not into swoony cowboy types, but I do like a good romantic suspense. This book delivers on both. This does feature hot, swoon worthy Texas Ranger, boots and Stetson included, however there is a nice balance of criminal investigation to give the story a good plot as the romance takes time to develop between our main characters. Our main characters Hill and Kody have a lot of emotional baggage between them. They've had feelings for each other since they were teenagers, but Kody eventually fell hard for Hill's younger brother Aaron. Hill left the small town of Loveless out of respect for his brother and to try and make a living and eventually made his way into the Texas Rangers. Kody has never forgiven Hill for leaving town, not helping his brother more, and especially not being there for her when she needed him. She needs someone to blame for all of the bad things in her life some by her own choice and some through no fault of her own, and Hill is the easiest for her to blame. Hill reenter's Kody's life when her father is murdered and he's asked to help with the investigation. This brings up all kinds of memories for both of them and emotions and conversations neither of them are ready for. When the case takes a strange turn and Kody becomes a target of the suspect, they are forced to face their feelings for each other. At this point the investigation kind of takes a back seat. I wanted a bit more of the investigation and police procedural stuff, but that's because I'm a big mystery/thriller fan whereas this eventually leans more heavily on the romance.

I really liked the writing style of this. The pacing was good, and as I mentioned there was a nice balance of the crime element with the romance. If you are a romance reader this doesn't get overly procedural or detailed with the crime investigation and it definitely has a good amount of steamy scenes. I thought the character development was decent, but I also appreciated that neither character wanted to change the other one. I feel like I got a good sense of each character's personality as well as a good description of the side characters and how they fit into the storyline even if they didn't play a major role.

This is a standalone in the Loveless, Texas series. I didn't feel like I needed to have read the previous book to get a handle on what was going on. I do however want to read it as I want to know more about the Lawton family, and I need to find out what happens next in the series. While Hill and Kody's story does wrap up nicely, the final chapter leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger setting you up for the next book in the series.

DB04-BC-EBOOK

If opposites do actually attract, then Gunnar Erickson and Frankie Reeves take the cake.
Frankie Reeves is complicated, even though she won’t admit it. She fills her days working as an ER nurse, taking care of her mom, and searching for the father she never knew. Anything else has no place in her perfectly compartmentalized, purposefully simple life. Attachments? No thank you. She has no time for that.

Gunnar Erickson recently moved to Green Valley to train at Viking MMA with his brother Cage. Being the youngest of the Erickson clan, he’s always felt like he has something to prove, and now that he’s finished with college, it’s his time to shine. But before he can step into the ring, a freak accident sends him to the ER and into the care of one Frankie Reeves.

While he’s immediately smitten, she pretends to be unfazed by this six-foot-three, two hundred and thirty-pound beef cake. Gunnar sets out to prove to Frankie that, not only does she like him more than she wants to admit, but he’s not the uneducated, brute she assumes he is. To Frankie, he’s the worst kind of complication, but that doesn’t make it easy to stay away.

Hate at first sight couldn’t possibly exist, right?

That’s what Grace Buchanan thought, before her useless car stranded her on the side of a deserted road just inside the Green Valley city limits.

When Tucker Haywood—tall and handsome and full of southern charm— shows up to help, her reaction to him is the strongest thing she’s ever felt in her life, and it makes no freaking sense.

It doesn’t make much sense to Tucker either. Not why she hates him, or why he finds her so intriguing. He knows well enough that Grace is moving to Green Valley for a fresh start, not to distract him when he’s got no room for something like her in his life.

The complications between them are endless, but that doesn’t stop her definitely not love-at-first-sight feelings from changing into something else entirely.

Grace and Tucker are about to learn the hard way that in Green Valley, hating someone has never tasted so sweet.

Review: The Borgia Confessions by Alyssa Palombo

The Borgia Confessions The Borgia Confessions by Alyssa Palombo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  This book was released on February 11, 2020 and is available at your favorite retailer.

This book was well written, and you can tell that the author did her research. I had alway heard of the Borgia's but I never really knew much about them. I learned a great deal from this book, and it prompted me to look up more about them and the actual events that took place. I always knew that the church was corrupt, but this take the hypocrisy to another level

This book takes place in the 1490s, when Rodrigo Borgia rises to power as Pope Alexander VI. Determined to make the Borgia's family a dynasty of its own, he uses his children born of his mistress as political pawns to bring his plans to fruition. The book is told from two perspectives, Cesare the eldest, and Maddalena a maid serving in the Vatican. Cesare would rather join the military as he has a head for strategy and is skilled at fighting, however his father has him join the church to broker political deals within the Vatican. Maddalena ends up as a maid and seamstress for Cesare's younger sister. She tries to be a pious woman, but eventually gets caught up in the power struggles, politics, and lust that seems to surround all of the Borgia's.

This book is long and very detailed about all of the things that happened from the time Rodrigo Borgia was made Pope until Cesare leaves the church. I will admit that this is not my preferred time period to read about when it comes to historical fiction, but it was very well done. I will say that towards the end it got a bit repetitive as Cesare and Maddalena's relationship progressed. Something would happen to upset Cesare, he would call for her to have a lust filled evening to release his frustration, wash, rinse, repeat. While he did confide in her and they had conversations, they both knew there would be no long term relationship between them because of their stations. I don't at all feel like he was using her or she felt forced into the relationship with him, it but their encounters just got repetitive after a while.

I highly recommend reading the author's note about her research and some of the claims made against the Borgia's and what she was able to uncover. It helped clear up some of the fictional liberties she took with the book as well as confirm the actual events that took place during that time.

Review: Ten Days Gone by Beverly Long

Ten Days Gone Ten Days Gone by Beverly Long
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I thought this police procedural was really well crafted. I enjoyed the characters and getting to know them on a personal level as well as detectives. I liked that the author set up the mystery so you had several different suspects to consider before finally revealing who-dun-it.

I do feel that the characters developed as if this were a book in an well established series. Rena and A.L. were presented to the reader as if you already knew them and their backstories. The author does a good job presenting their personal lives so you get to know them in this book, but they had a feel as if you should have already known them. As far as the mystery is concerned, this isn't overly grisly or graphic if that is a concern. They track down leads as detectives should and interview various people. Because this didn't have a ton of action the plot was a bit slow. I find that can often be the case with procedural type crime novels, especially if there isn't an active crime or thriller element happening as the investigation is taking place.

Overall, I found this entertaining and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I was invested enough in the characters to continue and I like the way the author set up the investigation. I'm looking forward to finding out what A.L. stands for and how he and Rena tackle their next case.

Review: Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Such a Fun Age Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The audiobook of this was great. I think listening to it adding just a little bit extra to the enjoyment of the book. The narrator did a wonderful job giving personality to each of the characters.

I won't go into the synopsis of this book because there are already a ton of those you can read. This book opens up such great conversation starters with regards to social issues. Emira's character is wonderful. I loved how relatable and real she was. I also loved how much she genuinely cared for Briar and always put her well being first. Like most of us in our twenties, she is figuring out what to do with her life while balancing time with friends and wanting to make her family proud. I felt that way about all of the characters, they feel like people you probably have met in your life or may have as friends. I'm sure we all know someone like Alix who seems to have it all together and loves to give advice about what you should eat or wear or how to parent your kids. Her personality was one of a person who seems to have good intentions, but doesn't actually care who she is hurting along the way and in Emira's case everything she does goes against everything she and her brand supposedly stand for.

There is a part towards the end of the book that talks about what really happened between Alix and Kelley. Her version of the truth, or at least the version she told herself is much different than the events that really happened because her version was easier to come to terms with. Emira says something similar when she chooses not to confront Alix about all of the offensive things she does to break down their relationship. Emira knows that Alix's version of the truth is the only one she'll believe so nothing she tells her will make a difference. I still wish she would have laid it all on the table for Alix, because Alix needed to hear it. Like Alix, so many people live in their privileged, oblivious bubbles where they tell people what they should and shouldn't do, but they have never experienced anything other than their own sphere of existence. The same is true for Kelley, while his intentions might have been good they weren't always what was best for Emira. I would have liked to see Reid put some of the commentary calling them out on the page to further the discussion. I think more people need educated on some of the things they are doing that they just don't know are not OK. In the end do I think it would have mattered to characters like Kelley and Alix, no they didn't want to hear it, but for someone reading or discussing this book it may have provided an "ah ha" moment.

Overall, really enjoyed this and understand why it has gotten so much hype.

Synopsis

The rich and popular Sharks rule at prestigious, ivy-covered Camden Prep. Once upon a time, I wanted to be part of their world--until they destroyed me.

The last thing I expected was an anonymous love letter from one of them.

Please. I hate every one of those rich jerks for what they did to me. The question is, which Shark is my secret admirer?

Knox, the scarred quarterback.

Dane, his twin brother.

Or Chance, the ex who dumped me. . .

Dear Ava,
Your eyes are the color of the Caribbean Sea.
Wait. That's stupid.
What I really mean is, you look at me and I feel something REAL.
It's been ten months since you were here, but I can't forget you.
I've missed seeing you walk down the hall.
I've missed you cheering at my football games.
I've missed the smell of your hair.
And then everything fell apart the night of the kegger.
Don't hate me because I'm a Shark.
I just want to make you mine.
Still.

Excerpt

“What do you want?” Knox says with as sneer as I ease in the football locker room. Cold eyes flick over my cheer skirt then move up and land on the hollow of my throat. It’s not cool enough at night for our sweater uniform so tonight my top is the red and white V-cut vest with CP embroidered on my chest.

“Where’s Chance?”

He whips off his sweat-covered jersey along with the pads underneath. “I don’t keep tabs on my best friend for you. Get out—before I scare you.”

He’s scaring me already.

But I can’t stop looking at him.

His shoulders are broad and wide, his chest lightly dusted with sparse golden hair, tan from the sun, rippling with powerful muscles, leading down to a tapered and trim waist. He has a visible six-pack, and my gaze lingers briefly on a small tattoo on his hip, but I can’t tell what it is. He isn’t brawny or beefy-looking like one might expect from a guy blessed with his athletic prowess, but sculpted and molded and—

Dropping my gaze, I stare at the floor. I shouldn’t be ogling him. Chance is my maybe-boyfriend.

I hear male laughter from one of the rooms that branch off from the locker room, maybe the showers, and I deflate, guessing that’s where Chance is.

Glancing up, I intend to ask him to tell Chance I came by to congratulate him on his two touchdowns, but my voice is frozen. Knox has unlaced his grass-stained pants and is shucking them off. His legs are heavily muscled and taut, unlike the leaner build of Chance. His underwear are white and tight, cupping his hard ass, the outline of his crotch—

“Like what you see, charity case? You can look, but you can’t touch.”

Anger soars, replacing my embarrassment. I know I'm just the scholarship girl at Camden, but why does he have to constantly remind me?

“Don't worry about me touching anything. I don’t like ugly.” The words tumble out before I can stop them. I meant his superior attitude, not his face, but I see the moment when he freezes and takes it the wrong way.

He touches his face, tracing his scar while his jaw pops. “Get the hell out. Only players allowed in here.”

I pivot and go for the door, forcing myself not to run. “Asshole,” I mutter.

His laughter follows me.
